What Cannabis Strain Pairs With What Movie : A Gourmet Guide

0
Cannabis_Masterpiece_Theatre

Two activities that are very popular right now are smoking weed and watching movies – and they go great together too! You’re happy and safe indoors, sheltered from the bad pandemic news outside for a few hours. Streaming from the dozens of movie-packed channels comes to you right at home, and indeed you can take your weed delivery too these days.

The true cannabis connoisseur, whom might also be a confirmed movie geek, knows that the right weed strain can make or break movie night. That’s why we’re going to recommend some individual cannabis strains and pair them with movie genres with one example movie each. May you have a most enjoyable and cultured evening!

Hard_Ticket_To_Hawaii

strain: Pineapple Haze
movie: Hard Ticket to Hawaii
why: Go Hawaiian!

You see how easy this is? Hard Ticket to Hawaii is practically a stoner comedy already. It’s like an episode of Baywatch with a PG-13 rating. It’s about some US drug enforcement agents in Hawaii (shot 100% on location) tracking down smugglers who pay for their shipment with diamonds flown in remote-control helicopters. Also, there’s a toxic snake wandering around. But it’s actually an excuse to cram as many bikini babes onto the camera at once, courtesy of notorious pervert director Andy Sidaris.

Of course, anything that’s lite, silly, and fun fits in with Pineapple Haze. It’s a Sativa-dominant strain with a fascinating terpene profile that makes it smell and taste like a deep tropical blend. Its primary terpenes – myrcene, pinene, and terpinene – are already either common to tropical fruits (like mango), or combine to make that familiar pineapple aroma and flavor. Best of all, its effect is light and giddy. Perfect for turning your brain off to watch something that will not challenge a single synapse in your noggin.

twelve_monkeys

strain: White CBG
movie: Twelve Monkeys
why: to help you figure it out

Twelve Monkeys is a sci-fi movie starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, in a plot about future people traveling back to the past to handle a deadly virus outbreak. Not COVID; this came out in 1995, although it feels like it could be current. It is directed by Terry Gilliam, and even though he was a member of the Monty Python troupe, he tends to be a high-brow. Twelve Monkeys is like a maze of nested Rubik’s Cubes, puzzles within puzzles, difficult to figure out and rewarding repeat views when you keep piecing together more clues.

Obviously, when you’re watching any movie that’s challenging to follow, you want weed that’s a head lift, cerebral and creative without weighing you down. You want a delta 8, which is the lightweight cannabinoid, and CBG, the cannabinoid that cranks up your concentration and attention span. White CBG is just the ticket! Amaze your friends when you point out how Bruce Willis knew to find the Army of the 12 Monkeys’ headquarters from the concrete pig head over the door.

Playtime

strain: Northern Lights
movie: Playtime
why: you want patience

Don’t get us wrong, Playtime is a good movie, with a 7.9 IMDB rating, but it’s a very different approach to movie story-telling. Written and directed by distinctive French talent Jacques Tati, it has almost no dialog and relies on elaborate sight gags on a huge canvas. For the 2.5 hour run-time, it just follows the main character tottering around Paris, France, while making wry observation on mid-20th-century infrastructure. It’s packed with many subtle gags, often several playing out in different corners of the screen at once. If you like to people-watch, you will like Playtime.

When you watch any movie that’s an endurance test, you want to stop being distracted and sit still. Northern Lights will keep you really still! It is a sedating, relaxing blend that will help you get into the mind-space of Tati’s quirky talent. In the end, you’ll feel like you did something completely different than smoke weed and watch a movie. With its one-two punch of caryophyllene and myrcene, count on Northern Lights to provide the deep relaxation you need to focus on a screen not saying anything for two and a half hours.

Roar

strain: Sour Space Candy
movie: Roar
why: reduces anxiety

Spook season is upon us, so we’re of course going to take into account good horror movies. What sets Roar apart, however, is that all of the gore effects are real. It’s about a family living with dozens of wild big African cats, including lions, tigers, cougars, cheetahs, and a stray elephant. None of these animals were fully tamed nor had adequate handlers, resulting in seventy cast members being injured including several requiring hospital stitches. The story behind this insanity, often called the most dangerous movie ever made, is often more interesting than the movie’s plot. But watching it is really rough on your anxiety!

For scary movies with lots of jump scares, you want a proven anxiety-fighter that’s calming and relaxing, to help you withstand the shocks and terrors you’re about to face. Armed with the sedating effects of Sour Space Candy, a CBD-dominant strain that’s heavy on the couch lock, you will be prepared to watch excruciating mayhem and people running for their lives in all directions without having a panic attack.

Frankenstein_Island

strain: Chemdawg
movie: Frankenstein Island
why: so you can laugh even harder

The flip side of Halloween season is watching the not-so-scary movies. Horror, as a genre, has a problem with low-budget, amateur productions which turn out unintentionally hilarious. Frankenstein Island is a shoestring budget production of notorious schlock director Jerry Warren, a name second only to Ed Wood for Hollywood box-office bombs. It is disjointed, illogical, laughably unscary, and chock full of “WTF?” moments. Watch it with friends, crack each other up with your wisecracks.

For so-bad-its-good movies, we could have recommended any number of notorious stinkers in the same vein as Plan Nine From Outer Space, The Room, etc. But you need something not just for comedy, but to keep you in the really silly kind of mood you have to be to appreciate true cult Z-movie art. Chemdawg, a notoriously giggly strain high in THC and limonene, will keep you howling at your buddy’s wisecracks while gearing you up for a retort at the same time.

eraserhead

strain: Gorilla Glue
movie: Eraserhead
why: deep psychedelics pair with Lynch

We’re using weird movies from the long-famous 366WeirdMovies website because, duh, why recommend ordinary movies? And among weirdness connoisseurs, none is consistently weirder than the King of the Surreal, David Lynch, and his magnum opus Eraserhead. It is freaky, psychedelic, and riddled with fever-dream logic. Words do not do it justice and never will. Lynch himself described it only as a “dream of dark and disturbing things.” It’s about… a family. Yeah, we’ll leave it at that. Sheesh!

Well, when the going gets weird, the potheads shrug and say “I’m not going to understand one damn things for the next hour and a half, I might as well get stupid.” Gorilla Glue is industrial strength weed that does not mess around. It is here to get you more stoned than the Big Lebowski. It does that with a high THC percentage that will leave you seeing vapor trails as you melt into your chair, a mere goldfish visiting Ringo’s Octopus’ Garden. Who knows, it might even knock you into an alternate dimension where this movie makes lateral sense.

Readers, what do you think of our little entertainment guides?

Cannabis is Now a Designer Drug

0
designer-cannabis

Dear #CannabisCommunity and #CannabisIndustry : Don’t look now, but the way we talk about cannabis is changing, and how we write about it needs to change too! We, in the cannabis media industry, can help guide the public towards a better understanding of cannabis as a composite drug.

The face of the cannabis industry is changing at such a fast pace, that it just barely even makes sense at this point to compare 2020 weed to 1990 weed. One of the ways that popular media is trying to get a handle on expressing the changes in modern cannabis is by noting a change in strength. Here’s a pretty comprehensive piece by the Atlantic for a quick run-down of that position:

Now, that assertion that “cannabis is more potent now than it was 30 years ago” is only a small part of the story. In strict argument we could more rightly say that “there are more potent doses of cannabis available than there were 30 years ago.” Doubtless, when we’re reviewing a dab of some extract rated at 78% THC, we can not deny that previous generations’ wild black market weed rolled into a joint would pale in comparison.

mall-CBD

But there’s also far less potent forms of cannabis products to consume. CBD, for instance, appears to have no psychotropic effects whatsoever, and is so mild that it’s being sold in a plethora of cosmetics. We’re all encountering CBD bath bombs and body cremes at the mall, with no dispensary in sight, and we’re not at all getting high off these products. So that’s a less potent form of cannabis.

And in fact, there’s every other claim you can make for all the various forms of products that start with a plant in the hemp family. Some are more potent, some are less potent, and some have effects depending on a cannabinoid in isolation and concentration, which are completely on a different scale.

The time is coming very soon when it no longer makes sense to discuss cannabis as “just one drug.”

Sure, we get all these different cannabinoids and terpenes and isomers from cannabis. We get cream and butter and cheese from milk, but we don’t refer to the whole category of dairy products as “milk.” Likewise, the derivatives of cannabis as we explore them are demanding their own individual considerations.

cannabinoid-family

Cannabinoids are a complete stand-alone drug spectrum

There’s a few facts we should always keep in mind when we write about the modern cannabis market:

  • We’re still in the pioneer days of research
  • We may have decades ahead of us before we have explored and documented the effects of every isolated chemical entity in cannabis
  • There are cannabinoids which have different effects besides “getting high,” including some compounds which work against each other
  • We are able to isolate and fine-tune these chemical compounds into a menagerie of products

We need to keep in mind that cannabis research was slowed down by its status as a prohibited drug, for some 70+ years of prohibition. That’s a gap of 70 years worth of industrial strength research that we’ve put into every other agricultural product. Look what that same period of industrial research did for our common supermarket produce:

produce-engineering

Likewise, the hemp plant is the plant of 1000 uses, and we are discovering that when you isolate the THC from the equation, you have not begun to address the other components. That’s over 100 cannabinoids, and let’s not forget the isomers of those cannabinoids – 30 alone just for THC, hence deltas 7, 8, and 10 so far. If every cannabinoid has 30 isomers, that’s three thousand of these compounds which we have to isolate and test one at a time to see their effects.

We need to accept that the terms “Sativa” and “Indica” are outdated

Sativa-vs-Indica-2021

Recently a few colleagues of your humble author have begun to speak up from the cannabis trenches, offering to throw out the terms “Sativa” and “Indica.” This is another outdated idea, because in reality 99% of all cannabis strains count as “hybrid,” which really doesn’t tell you much. That blog post, as I do here, answers that we need more focus on cannabinoid and terpene content.

Hear hear! There is so much more going on now besides the difference between sativa and indica. You can smoke twenty different strains and feel twenty different effects.

Cannabis is not a mere “drug.” Cannabis is a drug smorgasbord!

Case in point: CBG.

CBG_flower_insert

When I recently reviewed some delta 8 hemp flower, one of the strains was engineered to contain a high concentration of CBG. The effects I felt were profound, nothing at all like regular skunky-nug weed. Yet when I go looking at CBG research, the general consensus is that it has no psychoactive effects.

But too often when we say a cannabinoid is “not psychoactive,” what we mean is that it doesn’t get you high like THC. The definition of “psychoactive” is literally any “chemical substance that changes nervous system function and results in alterations in perception, mood, consciousness, cognition, or behavior.” Caffeine, nicotine, nutmeg, and even chocolate are considered psychoactive.

cannabis-species

Deeper digging on CBG does reveal some alternative claims.

CBG is thought to “strengthen the function of anandamide, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in enhancing pleasure and motivation, regulating appetite and sleep, and alleviating pain.” Yet in the very same paragraph that article brings the disclaimer that CBG is not psychoactive, thus won’t get you high.

But it IS “enhancing pleasure,” right? So why can’t we call that a “high”? That’s kinda the purpose of a high, is it not?

According to “anecdotal reviews of CBG users,” the effects of CBG are energizing, improvement in concentration, and soothing upon consumption. All over the place, you find discussions about the effects of CBG, and the consensus you may find is that there is definitely more to it than a similar dose of CBD.

The Marijuana Investor Summit WCP2018 finally comes clean on the issue: “Cannabigerol (CBG) is not a psychotropic drug but is mildly psychoactive. It doesn’t impair reasoning like THC.”

That is exactly my experience. CBG didn’t hit me as a cannabinoid to get you stoned, but rather felt energizing and motivating, like the spiky end of Sativa strains, a mild amphetamine, or a good strong cuppa joe.

As is the case with most cannabinoids, more research is needed to understand the effects of CBG.

That’s just one out of 100 cannabinoids to explore! THC and its isomers, plus CBD and a few other compounds, have all been given a large share of the research spotlight. But this leaves dozens of cannabinoids to explore.

snowflake-cannabis-strains

Is there a different “weed” for everyone?

We also have to remember that cannabis effects are partly subjective. Different users report different sensations and effects from the same mixture and dose. So while a cannabinoid may leave no impression on one person, it may knock another user for a loop. And yes, I know that the scientific terms are hard to explain and all the technical details suck some of the fun out of cannabis reporting. But we have to enable a more literate public discourse on cannabis components or we’re just going to run into more confusion later.

I’m addressing this post mainly to the cannabis media industry at large. But all of us in the cannabis community can benefit from a few take-aways:

  • We need to stop talking about cannabis like it’s just the THC molecule. That’s not even a chip off the tip of the iceberg anymore!
  • We need to stop talking about “cannabis strength.” That’s like saying methamphetamine is stronger than coffee. They are different things!
  • When we hear somebody say they tried cannabis once and it didn’t please them, we need to point out that isolating and concentrating one cannabinoid makes a completely different experience. There might be people seeking therapeutic treatment who would benefit from CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, etc., but they didn’t bother because one puff off their cousin’s bong didn’t hit them right.
  • We need to hammer on the need for research, and the need to drop more legal barriers to established clinical research.

Beyond all of the 100 cannabinoids, times the three thousand isomers of all the cannabinoids, and the 120 different terpenes in cannabis, we still have to absorb all of the entourage effects from each of those in combination. That leads us to an astronomical number. We may well end up having a different variety available for every adult user in the world.

Readers, thank you for taking the time to read through our hot take. We do this in the spirit of helping the cannabis community keep up with its own growth. We should really be proud of ourselves, we’ve come a long way. Readers: At what point can we think of cannabinoids individually and separately from just “getting high”? Extract Labs CBD Extract Tank Review – Great Taste!

0
extract labs review

I received the Extract Labs Blue Dream CBD Extract Tank and battery yesterday. I love it so much I didn’t feel a need to use the product consistently before writing the review.

Editor Note: Extract Labs makes CBD tanks in the varieties: God’s Gift, Guava Jam, Blue Dream, El Jefe, and Martian Candy. They also make Delta 8 tanks in the varieties: Martian Candy, El Jefe, Ogre Berry, and Sour Ghost.

extracts labs

Extract Tanks are very natural

Extract Tanks are some of the most natural CBD vape products on the market. Their tanks only include full-spectrum CBD distillate and cannabis terpenes, no fillers, or other thinning agents such as vitamin E acetate. Each tank includes a hefty 500 milligrams of CBD, CBT, and CBG. The single-use, non-refillable tanks fit with standard 510-thread batteries.

Love the taste!

I love the taste. Blue Dream is one of my favorite strains and I was so looking forward to this product. It didn’t disappoint. It tastes like smoking weed instead of fruit punch. Blue Dream is a Sativa-dominant hybrid with a sweet berry aroma redolent of its Blueberry parent.

Very smooth

Extract Labs tank smokes very smoothly. Not once has this blend made me cough.

Great calming effects

It has an immediate calming effect that is similar to a THC buzz, but more subtle.  I like the way the mouthpiece feels in my mouth.

extracts lab box

The battery is awesome

I really like the battery. The battery was in a beautiful teal color I liked but because of my poor vision, I could rarely find the little button to push to activate the pen. I couldn’t tell if it was charging. The extract labs battery lights up when I pull on it so I know the tank is distributing before I suck too hard.

I love love love the price. What a fantastic value!

I love that there are no fillers and I appreciate the simple packaging that delivered the product with a minimal footprint on the planet.

Out of all the vape products I have tried whether THC or CBD – I love this Extract Labs product the most. I’ll be back for more!

You can buy Blue Dream CBD Extract Tank here.

Have you tried these tanks? Let us know in the comments or on our forum.

What To Do If You Can’t Get Legal Cartridges In Your State

0
myths and facts about fake cartridges

Here at DabConnection, we’ve made a name for ourselves advocating for consumer safety. This means that we tackle the issue of fake carts so much that we’ve become the Internet’s leading authority on them.

Now, it’s all well and good to warn you away from fake cartridges, which are obtained on the black market from corner street plugs, and may contain any kind of mystery oil including many harmful contaminants. Boof carts led to an epidemic of people hospitalized and even dying from VAPI, right before COVID-19 hit and obliterated all other health news from the headlines. Even if the news doesn’t cover it much, people still get sick from illicit vape carts.

legal-carts-comment

But consumers, after we wise them up, often ask us the obvious follow-up question:

So I know fake carts are bad – what do I use instead?

Unfortunately, state-by-state legalization is leading to a checker-board of states across the US, with almost no two of them having the same cannabis legalization policy. With no federal legalization realized yet, we are all at the mercy of our local political climate. Each year, more states legalize, but even in states with a relatively permissive atmosphere, you can still have trouble getting hold of a decent, safe cannabis product due to poor legalization support.

We’re going to try to answer the question here. While we, of course, do NOT advocate committing an illegal activity, we also understand that many people depend on cannabis for medical or therapeutic reasons, or simply want to enjoy a toke without feeling hunted by the law. It is really unfair right now, because you can legally buy and enjoy cannabis in one state, but cross a border and be thrown in the slammer for doing the same thing.

So: What to do if you live in a state where cannabis is still prohibited? At least, what is your alternative to risking your lungs on fake carts?

vote-weed

Option #1: Vote!

This is the most important step for cannabis liberation, even regardless if you live in a legalized state or not. I know that many of you are cynical and discouraged about politics in the US; don’t feel like the Lone Ranger! But we have made tremendous strides in ending cannabis prohibition, and we’ve marched forward through the Obama administration and right through the Trump administration into the Biden administration without losing steam.

Cannabis legalization has broad bipartisan support, high polling approval, and is one issue where the majority of the nation agrees. We do have several federal bills making their way through legislation as we speak. All we need to do is keep telling our representatives, senators, and governors that the time to end pot prohibition is now.

Pay attention to every level of elections that affect you, from the municipal to the federal. Follow NORML and other cannabis legalization resources. Vote, and where you don’t have the option to vote, take petitions, hold demonstrations, write your representatives, and keep pushing. This really is the best step you can take to change your situation, albeit not always the fastest.

legalization-map-June-2021

Option #2: Travel

As of this writing, 19 out of 50 US states have legalized for recreational cannabis. No medical card required, just waltz on in and buy some pot. You’re not likely to be that far from a legalized state, and if the few-hour drive isn’t too daunting, you should visit. The exception is the southeast US, naturally, but we’re guessing anybody in the Bible Belt didn’t expect an easy go of ending prohibition by now.

State-to-state tourism is a factor in some states legalizing. They’re looking at that revenue they get from a cannabis industry, and they’re all rolling in the dough! You can send a message both to your state and to the state you’re traveling to: you’ll take your business where it is appreciated.

Many more states are legal for medical use, so you can get an out-of-state medical card for that situation. Or there are states where cannabis is decriminalized for mere possession for personal use, so – it’s not something we advocate – but depending on your situation, you might be OK to transport your supply back home.

In some cases, if you don’t have firm anchors to living where you live now, you might even consider moving. There is an ongoing wave of migration to cannabis-legal states, which again sends a message to reinforce “good” behavior by taking your economic stimulation to a state where it’s welcome, while punishing “bad” behavior because states hate to lose residents.

delta-8-cartridges

Option #3: Try Delta 8 or Other Variants

By now, you should have heard the news that there’s more to marijuana than THC! As of now (check back in ten minutes though), the variants to traditional THC include delta(s) 7, 8, and 10, plus there are some new methods such as creating a THC acetate called “THC-O.” These variants exist in a legal gray area, but anything derived from hemp is federally legalized by the hemp farm bills.

Delta 8, which we have covered extensively, has effects very similar to regular THC, only milder. In some cases (as with your humble author), you might even prefer delta 8 because it gives a more clear-headed high that allows you to stay active and not just melt into the couch. If you’re using a delta 8 product that includes CBD and naturally-derived terpenes, you almost can not tell the difference after a few puffs. We’re starting to see hemp come out in the same strains as cannabis, just because it’s pretty easy to graft and clone your way from one to the other.

In addition, being federally legalized, hemp products are legal to ship! This means that you can find a safe distributor online. I myself have done this. Check with any of the products we have reviewed in the delta 8 / 10 / etc category. It is gloriously convenient to order online where you can pay for hemp with your debit card and get it mailed to your door – like a human being!

True, there are some states that are also taking the extra killjoy step of trying to prohibit delta 8 and other derivatives or variants, but when something is federally legalized, it’s pretty tough for state regulation to stick. With CBD products being sold at every mall now, it’s really going to be hard to justify popping somebody for a little vial of hemp juice.

Marijuana Flower

Option #4: Try Flower

Hey, this is going to sound really wild and crazy, but just hear me out…

Did you know that cannabis comes in PLANT form? Did you, in fact, know that marijuana is an organic vegetable that grows right out of the ground, just like soybeans and corn and stuff? It’s an actual crop!

I’m never sure where to bring this up with modern generations, but cannabis has been cultivated and used throughout 10,000 years of history. People were happy to just grow it, harvest it, grind it, and smoke it. There were no vapes. There were no cartridges. There was no VG and PG. All you need is weed and fire! You know how many deaths and hospitalizations we had from smoking weed for 10,000 years? ZERO!

We’re not advocating that people who live where the plant is illegal break the law, but… given the alternatives, why would you spring for a cartridge of mystery oil that was also illegal, when you can smoke the plant mostly risk-free? At least with flower, you have eliminated the possibility of vitamin E acetate, PG and VG, heavy metals, synthetic K2/Spice, and all the other evil stuff they’ve found in black market cartridges. When you smoke flower, all you have to worry about is maybe some pesticides (spoiler alert: they use pesticides on the produce you eat too).

I know, this is an outrageous proposition for some of you. But really, give it a try once, you might like it. Every generation older than Millennial remembers when we made do with sneaking off for a joint on a daily basis – you can too!

black-market-sesh

Option #5… Is there a more “trustworthy” black market?

Well, again we don’t advocate breaking the law. Buuut, we have covered the underground sesh scene before. These are a subculture of pop-up weed events, similar to the concept of a swap meet, flea market, or rave. Were an individual to obtain their cannabis products through this scene, as opposed to a random plug off the street, they might be a small bit safer.

A vendor at an underground sesh is a regular. Other people there know them and can vouch for them. If a vendor deals boof, word gets out fast. Peer pressure in a tight community does have the power to keep people honest. You want to be able to trust somebody you see week after week (or month after month, or whatever the schedule) in company with other people who trust them too.

We’re not going to present that as a viable option. But we have seen how recklessly some of you live, and my God, y’all scare us! Since the underground sesh scene is most active in southern California, a 100% legalized state, we know that some of you are determined to take that route anyway.

Conclusions

We appreciate that a lot of you out there are suffering under draconian laws based on ancient bigotry and hoodoo bad science. Our heart goes out to you, and we’re trying to do all we can to help everyone safely and legally enjoy their leisure activity or medical relief. We are pushing for a brighter future, where every American can blaze a joint on their front porch, greeting the dawn like God intended (and was 100% legal until the 1930s anyway).

Together, we’ll get through this. But in the mean time, we all do what we can to get by, right?

The Mega Fake Cartridges List 2024

0
fake cart list 2024

Here at dabconnection.com we always try to bring you the best cannabis industry-related reviews and news.  A very important part of that is helping you, the users, spot fake products and avoid them. So we came up with the idea to make a mega list and cover all known fake carts out there. This list will be continuously updated.

The easiest way to search this list is to press CTRL+F and search the text of the cart you are looking for.

This list is made using data gathered by our main editor Pete who is an expert when it comes to fake carts.

Definitions of cartridges:

Legit – An actual company with a license and location
Street / Black Market – A single-source unlicensed brand that does not appear on fake cartridge retailer listing yet
Counterfeit / Faked – Knock-offs of legit brands
Fake – A brand that appears to be completely baseless, sold only through fake cartridge retailer listings

Don’t buy THC carts online. Because of federal law, they can’t be shipped across states. If a site or an Instagram page offers shipment across states they are scammers and are selling fake products that you won’t probably even get if you pay for them. (side note: CBD and delta 8 are exceptions to the shipping rule, but even there you’re gambling.)

To find out where you can find US state cannabis license information click here.

The difference between a QA / R&D lab test result and a California compliance COA is explained in detail here.

Our thanks go out to the Reddit and Blacklist.xyz cannabis-interest communities, whose vigilant street reporting has been an important tip line in this project.

And now let’s start listing some carts.

Synthetic Cannabinoids

0
Synthetic_cannabinoids-1024x576

Synthetic cannabinoids are a class of artificially created compounds created to mimic the compounds found within the natural cannabis plant, with unsuccessful results. These molecules bind to the same receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system, intended to mimic the effects of cannabis and its derivatives as closely as possible. They are classified as “designer drugs,” sometimes sprayed onto otherwise harmless plant matter, even natural hemp, as an enhancer or even directed to be taken as a stand-alone drug.

K2_Spice_info_1-1263x1536

K2_Spice_info_2-920x1536

Every synthetic cannabinoid we have found so far has bad effects!

The number one thing to know about synthetic cannabinoids is “STAY AWAY”! There have been no known results so far where a synthetic cannabinoid produced the same effects as its natural counterpart, and in the meantime they have very toxic health effects.

There are hundreds of these chemicals milling about on the market now. In general, the most common side effects reported from synthetic cannabinoids are:

  • rapid heart rate
  • nausea and vomiting
  • mental effects – paranoia, hallucination, violent behavior, suicidal thoughts

The New York State resource page on synthetic marijuana substitutes further elaborates:

“Users of the synthetic mixtures can never be certain in which ways the drugs will harm them, but users have experienced symptoms that include renal failure, arrested heart rate, high blood pressure, loss of consciousness, violent behavior, nausea, vomiting, tremors, seizures, hallucinations, paranoia, agitation, anxiety, and even death. These effects can be similar to those of phencyclidine, or PCP.”

One consistent pattern is the effect synthetic cannabinoids have on the mind. Psychosis is a very common side effect, persisting for weeks and even months in some cases from a single dose. These psychosis symptoms tend to include suicidality, affective symptoms, self-injury, catatonic features, and/or Capgras syndrome. Many a synthetic cannabis experiment has ended in psychiatric hospitalization.

The issue with synthetic cannabinoids is that chemistry is just never that simple. Consider the case of THC and delta 8 THC, two otherwise identical molecules differing (in layman’s terms) only in the way the atoms bond. Yet they have vastly different effects, with delta 8 THC being far less potent than THC “classic.” That just goes for an example of how hard it is to predict the effects of any particular molecule.

synthetic-marijuana-packets-803x600

Synthetic cannabinoids came out slightly before cannabis started to be legalized

The most common form of marketing synthetic cannabinoids were under the brand names “K2,” “Spice,” or simply “synthetic marijuana.” Sometimes, to dodge drug control laws, they were sold as “incense” or “bath salts.” They continue to be sold internationally, wherever the laws or enforcement of same tend to be most flexible. In many cases they are identified as “all natural,” because the chemicals are sprayed onto natural plant matter. They are also typically labeled as “not for human consumption.”

Some synthetic cannabinoids have their origin as intended for usage in laboratory testing, since they bind to the same receptors. But most are simply brewed up in garage and basement laboratories similar to how drugs like LSD and methamphetamine are produced.

Fake and black market cannabis products may be laced or substituted with synthetic cannabinoids

Since none of these substances are legalized in any way, there is absolutely no control over how they are produced. Likewise, black market cannabis products are also produced and distributed outside of legal standards and control. In one case, in Illinois in 2018, synthetic weed was passed off as the real thing resulting in dozens of cases of injury and two deaths. We have also seen one recent case of a fake Connoisseur Concentrates cartridge which was lab tested and found to be laced with synthetic cannabinoids, sending its user to the mental ward with psychotic symptoms.

Black market cannabis products are invariably a dirty business, resulting in thousands of hospitalizations and dozens of deaths from fake cartridges containing any number of contaminants. Synthetic designer drugs are just one more reason to avoid this hazard and only use products from a licensed dispensary selling lab-tested products.

Dark Hawk Genetics : Black Market Sister Brand to Big Chief

0
DarkHawk-fake-1024x576

One rule of thumb to go by in the cannabis vaping community is that, if you’re having trouble tracking down a brand, it’s probably black market. Such is the case with Dark Hawk Genetics, sometimes known only as “Darkhawk.” You will find many leads for this company, all of them dead ends.

Before we get started, “Darkhawk” is not to be confused with the comic book character.

DarkHawkGenetics_1-341x220

All the “official” sources for DarkHawk are dead ends

First there’s the packaging, which lists “darkhawkgenetics.com” right on the box! That should be straightforward enough… but it’s a parked domain at GoDaddy.com. Note, this box shot comes from a Reddit post only 24 days old as of this writing.

How about that Instagram? Sure, here is @darkhawkgenetics on Instagram. It’s an account with zero posts set to “private.” However, it does list a separate domain, “darkhawk.co.” Could this be the actual home page of this brand? Maybe, but that domain is also nothing but a big logo on a page. Here’s a screenshot of the source code for that page, which actually contains the most information we’ve seen for it so far:

DarkHawk_source_code-768x439

We see the claims “the next generation in cannabis brands,” and “one of Southern California’s fastest growing Cannabis brands,” and a name for the author, “Taha Khan.” We should view source code more often! Sadly this doesn’t narrow things down; there’s a lot of “Taka Khan”s out there including some high profile people in academics, and the name was probably used as an alias here.

Long story short: No company, no license, no source. Conventional wisdom in the vape community claims that Big Chief “owns” the Dark Hawk brand. For a recap, Big Chief was a black market brand for so long that their packaging saturated the black market supply sites, long before they ever thought of a license. They finally did acquire one, as an afterthought, and that license has blinked in and out of existence ever since.

Regardless of Big Chief’s license status, the damage is already done. Black market vape carts are now such a toxic epidemic, they’ve stretched well beyond synthetic cannabinoids to even avenues for fentanyl. That’s beyond the initial vape-related lung injury epidemic that predated COVID. Even if they extract the cannabis and make it right in front of you, every time you buy a Big Chief cart, you are supporting a company financed by blood money. As is the case with any brand which is counterfeit to the ends of the Earth and back.

The deadly reputation of Big Chief is their own doing from cruising without due regulation for so long, and they’re apparently doing it all over again with DarkHawk.

DarkHawkGenetics_2-768x1024

DarkHawks flood the market with no license in sight

Your most common search for Dark Hawk’s owners will simply uncover other consumers asking each other the same thing. Obligatory Reddit list:

alt-package-DarkHawk-315x420

This brand has also been on the streets since at least December 2019, going by this IMGUR video.

Speaking of video, Dark Hawk Genetics is prominently reviewed on YouTube. Dozens of hits there, it seems several reviewers have an interest in them.

Dark Hawk Genetics are not single-sourced

You will find no legit dispensaries carry DarkHawk, but every black market website and corner plug does!

BMDarkHawk_1-364x600

BMDarkHawk_2-1024x548

DarkHawkGenetics_3-1024x603

DarkHawkGenetics_4-1024x658

We see a lot of Dark Hawk packaging with “delta 8” on it too. This might simply be a case of black market packagers in China getting whiff of the popularity of delta 8 and printing it on the box, with no connection to anything inside the cart.

We find a number of DarkHawk plugs on social media too…

Twitter_darkHawk-425x420

LeafedOut_DarkHawk-1024x665

Facebook_DarkHawk-563x600

So we can blow away any comforting delusions we might have had about the oil within these cartridges being “single source” or “centrally distributed.” They are concentrated in southern California (OC, LA, IE) but we’ve seen them as far east as Illinois.

Just treat every DarkHawk as fake

Between all the sketchy distributors, we’re going to say for safety’s sake to just steer clear of them now. Regardless of future developments, it’s far too late for the brand to save face with a token license now. It’s been 2 years, they have a blank domain. Take a hint: any company that insults you this way could care less about anybody’s health.

Readers, when the inevitable hospitalization reports come in regarding DarkHawks, file them here in the comments or detour to our forum.

The Federal Vape Mail Ban : Everything We Know

0

We saw this coming ahead of time, but it wasn’t until the law’s deadline arrived that the vaping industry started to panic. Briefly, there seems to be a Federal law banning ALL vaping products from being sent through the mail. However, the language of this wording is so broad that you could interpret it several ways.

We’re seeing many conflicting reports and interpretations about this ban. We will try to sort them out below:

smoking-kid-indonesia

Preventing Online Sales of E-Cigarettes to Children Act (2020)

The original bill was introduced by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas). The bill was passed on December 21st, 2020, and was scheduled to go into effect April 27, 2021 (today as of this writing).

The Bill is presented as an amendment to the 2010 law, the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT Act), which forbids direct sales of cigarettes to consumers through the mail. Here is the PACT Act fact sheet, and here is the text of the actual Preventing Online Sales of E-Cigarettes to Children Bill by Senator Feinstein.

USPS_delivery

The Postal Service is Delaying Implementation

There are huge issues with the way this bill is being interpreted. So much so that the US Postal Service has delayed implementing the bill because they’re frankly stumped at how to interpret it. The law also applies to FedEx and UPS, which has already said, quote, “they will follow the U.S. Postal Service’s directive and won’t ship vaping products.”

The USPS published a memo in the Federal Register to try to make a clear statement about their intended direction. In that memo, they specify “electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS),” and include details for an exception application process where companies can apply to claim their product as an exception. On the other hand, this is a sheet of impenetrable bureaucratic gobbledegook which leads off with a few sections about “alien physicians” (foreign-born medical students, not doctors from space). The upside here is that it seems to allow exceptions for both CBD and, possibly, some THC products!

At the same time, the exception approval process has the potential to be a bureaucratic backlog. HempToday quotes: “The Postal Service anticipates receiving ENDS-related applications at a rate several orders of magnitude above the historic norm.” The backlog to approving each individual product one at a time could be the actual ban, effectively delaying all products off the market.

vape_mail

Interpretation #1: The Law Doesn’t Ban Anything At All?

As we read it, the original PACT Act mandates that sellers of tobacco products:

    • Pay all applicable taxes (don’t they have to do this anyway?)
    • Comply with local laws pertaining to where the seller is located (they do this already, e.g., can’t buy Delta 8 through the mail in restricted states)
    • Register with the state and make periodic reports to state tax collectors
    • Verify adult ID both at time of purchase and upon delivery (is this really impossible?)

The new act simply extends PACT to cover vaping-related products. As the information sheet at Feinstein’s own website says, the bill merely requires online e-cigarette retailers to:

    • Verify the age of customers for all purchases
    • Require an adult with ID to be present for delivery
    • Label shipping packages to show they contain tobacco products
    • Comply with all state and local tobacco tax requirements

Again, none of these constitute a “ban” as we read it. We already take such precautions for other mail-order adult-only purchases. The USPS has standards in place for cases where you have to show ID to pick up a delivery.

aromatherapy

Interpretation #2: The Law Bans Everything in the Universe?

The PACT Act revisions are extended to cover a range of things detailed as “e-cigarettes, e-hookahs, e-cigars, vape pens, advanced refillable personal vaporizers, or an electronic pipe,” plus “any component, liquid, part, or accessory” of these devices. The language is both wonkily out of touch – what the hell is an “e-hookah”? – and so broad that you could probably apply it to a prescription asthma inhaler. No really:

> “any electronic device that, through an aerosolized solution, delivers nicotine, flavor, or any other substance to the user inhaling from the device.”

That “ANY substance” part is the kind of language that makes government regulation implementation fall apart. Air fresheners? Incense? Aromatherapy? Sinus spray? You could go on all day. We’re surprised the whole post office isn’t shut down.

There is a provision in the bill exempting products which are FDA-approved for “any other therapeutic purpose,” but that’s almost null and void anyway because the FDA doesn’t currently approve anything cannabis-related except for a narrow range of prescription products. The FDA doesn’t approve vitamins and baby formula; you can forget vaping stuff.

best delta 8

Interpretation #3: The Law Applies to CBD and Delta 8 Products

Even though hemp-derived products are legalized by the Farm Bill as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC, this ban is said by some to apply to CBD and Delta 8 vaping devices. Vaping360 asserts:

> “The postal ban and PACT Act provisions will include all e-liquid and oil vaping devices, nicotine and nicotine-free e-liquids, CBD and delta 8 carts, liquids and oils, and every related component, part or accessory intended for those products.”

Perhaps the authors there are taking a broad interpretation and hyping the panic just a tad. Particularly, small retailers are said to be up in arms about this legislation, because even though the regulations still permit operation, most small businesses can’t operate under such a burden of red tape and still make a profit.

Again we have the fog of uncertainty over government intent. From the Postal Service memo to Diane Feinstein’s bill, we see constant confusion between tobacco, nicotine, THC, CBD, Delta 8, and even any plain old inhaled thing. You have to find and question each author to discover if they intended to single out CBD or they’re just too out of the loop to understand the concept that not all inhaled products are for ingesting tobacco. I’d be willing to bet that if you took a poll of Congress today, there would be several members who thought CBD comes from tobacco.

everything-is-broken

Potential Fall-Out?

For one thing, this might hopefully cut off some of the criminal end of the vape industry, both the vape scam sites and the black market vape cart packaging pipeline. However, given that several laws against these criminal elements already exist and they’re still available on every street corner, one more law might not even slow them down.

In fact, the legit, licensed, and responsible retailers and manufacturers of these products might be hardest hit. This could have a blowback effect of driving even more people to the black market, making an already crisis situation that much worse.

Delta 8 and CBD forums all over the web are practically frantic with the news. Bear in mind, many users need hemp derivatives for both medically-approved treatment and personal therapy reasons. A bill aimed originally at preventing children from smoking tobacco (with the reasoning that it increases their risk of COVID, no less!) is now threatening the entire inhaled product industry.

For one more possible wrinkle: This could also speed the adoption of legalization for brick-and-mortar dispensaries in the states. All federal laws applying to USPS don’t apply when it comes to B2B industrial shipping.

Bottom line take-away:

If you depend on these products and have a legit channel to acquire them, buy them while you still can. Or maybe not; we’ve seen overarching draconian legislation fail before because it was impossible to implement. This particular logjam was signed during the Trump administration, after all.

Readers… Uh, say things? Maybe in the comments below, maybe in the forum? Knock yourselves out. We’re going to go lie down for a while.

Cannabis Drug Testing in 2021 : The Least You Should Know

0

Here we are in this in-between time in the US, when cannabis is still federally illegal but legalized in most states and even fully legalized in about 1/3rd of US states at this point. We’re also bordered by Canada and Mexico, two countries which have moved towards legalization. What a time to be alive, right?

Well, it’s not that easy. There is still one group which seems to live in the weed prohibition era, and that’s employers. Employment-related drug screenings have carried on pretty much as they had during the Reagan ’80s, despite four decades of progress since. This leaves most if us confused as to standing employment policy regarding cannabis use.

Your humble author might bring to mind that, had we all fought harder for our civil liberties a few decades ago, we wouldn’t be in this situation now where it’s completely normal to hand over a cup of pee to somebody in order to get them to hire you. But that train has left the station, seems.

Let’s cut to the chase and answer your biggest question:

CBD_tinctures

Will CBD or Delta 8 cause me to fail a drug test?

Yes! In a nutshell, drug screens for cannabis look for THC chemical markers in your system. Even if you only use CBD or Delta 8, derivative cannabinoids like these still contain tiny trace amounts of THC. Even in states that prohibit cannabis except for CBD oil to treat some medical conditions, the most they ask for is less than 0.3% THC. That is still plenty to show up in a drug test.

Our bodies break down THC as metabolites, which stay mainly in the fatty tissues because they are lipophilic (this means fat-soluble) compounds. Cannabis drug testing looks for these metabolites and can detect even tiny quantities in a sample. These tests are so sensitive that they can find positives from eating hemp seed bars, taking CBD tinctures, vaping delta 8, etc. Anything that came from a hemp or marijuana plant that you have ingested will cause you to fail a drug screen.

how-long-does-marijuana-stay-in-the-system

How long does cannabis stay in my system?

That depends a lot on how heavy a user you are, your lifestyle, and your metrics such as weight and body fat percentage. The rule of thumb is one month (3-4 weeks). That may differ from one individual to another though, but if you’re not clean after a whole month, that’s an extreme outlier case. Some people can test clean after just two weeks dry.

Body fat is a consistent factor in how long THC stays in your system, because cannabinoids are fat-soluble (which is why you make oil for vaping and canna-butter for edibles). The more fat you have, the more cannabis traces stay in your system. This is bad news for the couch lock set! If you have a tendency to zone out on the couch with your bong and your munchies, you’ll have a month of going dry and engaging in rigorous healthy living before you can pass that drug test.

brain_scans

What are the different kinds of drug tests?

Urine analysis is the most common kind. There is also blood, saliva, and hair testing. Blood and saliva tests have a far shorter window of detection, basically 72 hours after you’ve consumed cannabis. This is because these tests only measure active narcotic influences at the time, similar to a breath test for alcohol. Blood and saliva do not reveal cannabis use from more than a few days ago. These two are usually only administered in settling immediate cases of intoxication, such as a DUI arrest.

However, the hair test goes even farther back than a urine test. A hair sample obtained from the scalp or body can detect cannabis use as far as six months back! So if you’re getting a hair test, you should hope that it’s a normal thing for you to have short scalp hair, and less body hair. If you show up to the test shaved and waxed, that’s kind of a giveaway. Generally, hair tests are only administered for high prestige positions like government contractors who need maximum security clearance.

There are additional ways to detect cannabis usage when you go into neurological imaging and other deeply involved technology, but these are highly unlikely to be administered anywhere outside of a clinical study.

The vast majority of the average civilian drug test will involve urine testing. It’s safe, non-intrusive, and practical.

cheating_drug_test

Do any of the ways of cheating a drug test work?

Bottom line: It’s risky at best.

There’s three main ways that people use to try to fake-pass a drug test:

    • Obtaining a clean urine sample – best bet
    • Flushing and detoxing – bad idea
    • Using adulterants on the urine sample – worse idea

Faking the sample

There are two ways to get a clean urine sample: Get a clean friend to provide you with a sample, or buy fake pee. For the former option, that’s up to your connections – everybody likes having that one Mormon friend for this reason, because the Mormon religion forbids all chemical recreation even down to coffee.

Synthetic urine is a commercially available product! The technology is being improved all the time to meet demand. It is chemically created to mimic the exact ingredients of human urine, even down to PH levels and scent. It’s even legal in all but 2 states, New Hampshire and Indiana. These products come in the form of a kit, which must be carefully mixed ahead of time.

If you’re taking a urine sample in to your test to substitute for your own, the biggest tell that will reveal your ploy is temperature. At the best, you will have to store the sample in something like a hip flask next to your skin under your clothes, and even then it’s not likely to be in the 90-100 degree zone normal for a fresh urine sample. After that, some chemical markers may still raise suspicion. Human urine is a biological product after all, so things happen to it over time once it is stored outside the body.

Flushing and detox

If only it were that easy! The bottom line with 99% of the flushing and detox industry is that it’s all pure quackery. Several “natural cleanse” products are really just instruction kits to clean up for 30-60 days before the test – you could have done that without the product.

Detox and flushing kits can be both risky to your health and detectable in the sample anyway. None of the home remedies passed around in hippie lore, such as drinking lots of cranberry juice or certain kinds of tea, work. The whole of “detox science” is just quackery through and through. Your body’s natural processes are set to work at a given speed. There is no known method proven to speed up your detoxification. And again, there are various medical conditions which can make flushing and detox methods a risk to your health. Even drinking large quantities of water at once can cause hyponatremia, which is deadly.

Cleaning the sample

Finally, you’ve likely heard of urine cleaning products, typically advertised in the backs of magazines or behind the counter at head shops. These are all basically bleaching agents, which may help burn off cannabinoids but also drastically alter the chemical composition of urine. Bottom line, every single one of these will show up on the test.

It is always a bad idea to attempt to fool a drug test. Any tiny variance in temperature, chemistry, color, odor, viscosity, PH level, and so on, will just raise suspicion. In most cases the lab can flag you for a follow-up, such as a second sample under supervision, or a hair test. In some states, attempting to fool a drug screen is a crime in and of itself.

drug_testing_consent

When is employment drug testing going away?

That’s the $64K question, isn’t it?

In light of the fact that about 33% of the United States population lives where pot is legal, you would think that testing for marijuana would go the way of the dodo. After all, we don’t screen for alcohol and tobacco, do we? In addition, cannabis is now medically recommended in more states than ever before for a growing list of medical conditions. Nevertheless, employers do not have to make an allowance even for medical usage, since it’s not a federally recognized prescription.

It is very difficult for a free market Capitalist system (which the United States dreams it is) to regulate how employers hire employees. They can test you on any metric, even 100% certified pseudo-science quackery like the Myers-Briggs “personality inventory.” Employers can do anything they want to in screening applicants, as long as they don’t violate federal discrimination laws. That comes down to “a person’s race, national origin, color, sex, religion, disability, genetic information (including family medical history), or age (40 or older).” After that, they can ask you to bark like a seal if they want to. And we’d all probably do it.

Are employer attitudes changing towards marijuana testing? It depends on whom you ask. Keep in mind, various business interests have a finger in this pie, including the background check industry, the drug rehab and treatment industry, and various business interests. For example, insurance companies offer a discount for business insurance if you drug-screen your employees. With all these conflicting interests weighing in, it can be difficult to find a true answer to this question.

The closest thing we can find to an unbiased authority of the subject is Nolo, the online legal library resource. They have this to say:

> “The California Supreme Court has ruled that the state’s medical marijuana law applies only to criminal prosecution, not to the workplace. Likewise, the Colorado Supreme Court has held that an employer may fire an employee for off-duty use of medical marijuana, even though the use was lawful under Colorado state law.”

> “A handful of states, however, have passed specific laws prohibiting an employer from discriminating against an employee or applicant for lawful use of medical marijuana or requiring an employer to reasonably accommodate such employees at the workplace. This area of law is relatively new; contact an employment lawyer to find out the rules in your state.”

Nolo has a listing of these states and their individual employer legal obligations regarding cannabis users here. Even there, the line is fuzzy. From state to state, there are exceptions and contingencies on both sides. It’s complicated!

Meanwhile, NBC News claims that some employers are finally relaxing drug screening policies. The most recent statistic we can find for this factoid is approximately 50% of employers screen for cannabis use, which is still far too high.

work-free-drug-place

Employer cannabis screening is a growing issue

As more states legalize, and more legalization marches from medical to recreational use, something has got to give. We’re guessing that market forces will prevail, as companies which insist on full drug screening eventually run out of viable candidates. Oregon has just decriminalized all drugs, just to show what the wave of the future might be.

Readers, what are your experiences rectifying your employment and your cannabis usage? What is your projection for what happens next? We’re eager to get this conversation started, here in the comments or in our cozy forum.

Anatomy of a Vape Scam Site: Green Queens Dispensary

0

Here at DabConnection, we proudly cultivate our reputation as one of the few truly unbiased review websites for the cannabis industry. Unfortunately, when you’re dedicated to telling the unvarnished truth as a staunch consumer-side advocate, you tend to make a few enemies. We get a lot of blowback from outfits whom we’ve called out in the past, but we’ll talk more about that further down.

Recently we’ve become quite alarmed at the number of fake websites online scamming users. These sites claim to sell cannabis products, but end up taking people’s money and sending nothing. The more we post about this, the more it blows up. A recap:

It seems for every one we report, commenters come back with ten more they found. The FDA and DEA are aware of this issue and have so far taken down 44 vape scam websites, but of course more pop up. The watchdog site The Scam Directory lists many more; at rough count they list 1,600 known websites running rip-off stores in the cannabis product niche!

Meanwhile our commenters here report sad tales of getting scammed for their money, some going into the thousands of dollars. Check the comments under those previous blog posts listed in the recap. One person after another reports getting ripped off. Let’s reiterate:

ALL Websites Offering to Ship THC Products in the US Are Scams!

All of them, all of them, all of them. There are no exceptions to this rule. If you live in a state where cannabis is still illegal without a medical referral, I’m sure that you wish that it were that easy to just buy some vape carts online like any other product. But it does not work that way.

You can ship hardware. That is legal. You can ship accessories, pipes, rigs, vaporizers, batteries, and so on.

You can ship CBD and hemp products. That is also allowed under the Farm Bill, as long as the products contain less than 0.3% THC.

You can ship Delta 8 THC. Delta 8 is so far federally unregulated. That may change, and it is already banned in several states that don’t have a legal cannabis plan yet, but for now, as far as the federal government is concerned, shipping it is fine.

You can get cannabis products delivered locally in a legalized state. Delivery is not the same thing as shipping. Shipping is an act requiring postage, packaging, and a nation-wide network. Delivering is something you do with a pizza.

YOU CAN NOT SHIP REGULAR THC IN THE UNITED STATES. That is because shipping falls under federal jurisdiction, and THC is federally illegal under the Controlled Substances Act. This applies even if you are shipping from a fully legalized state to another fully legalized state, because all postal services fall under federal jurisdiction.

From the Lawyers.com website:

> “Having marijuana legalized in only a few states means that it must stay there, no matter where you are from.”

> “Shipping companies, such as USPS, UPS, and FedEx, reserve the right to search any packages that they flag as suspicious. These companies have drug dogs that are trained to smell for marijuana. If your package is flagged, USPS, UPS, and FedEx have the ability to search it and call the police. In fact, in 2016, the USPS seized over 36,000 pounds of marijuana.”

So there you have it. Even if a website took your payment online and legitimately shipped THC products to you, the USPS, UPS, and FedEx would stop the package in their processing facility and turn it over to the cops. It would never get to you.

I understand, this is an extremely confusing time in the history of cannabis! Let’s try it as an infographic:

cannabis_shipping_guidelines

We have come all the way from a blanket banning of a whole plant to stressing out about percentages of an individual molecule, even to the point, in delta 8’s case, of distinguishing it from a very similar molecule. This is ridiculous, but it’s the reality of life right now.

Which Brings Us to Green Queen’s Dispensary…

One such scam site, greenqueensdispensary.com, made a great effort to bring itself to our attention and let me tell you, it’s a doozy! How many red flags are on this site? Let us count the ways.

#1: They demand payment in Bitcoin or CashApp only

GreenQueensDispensary_Bitcoin

They want payment methods to be non-refundable. Legitimate retail websites will allow you to pay in normal credit / debit card or PayPal. Readers have reported to us that with scam sites, the initial charge is just the beginning. Some sites will string you along with messages demanding more money to cover shipping, taxes, tariffs, the mule got sick, or whatever excuse. There is always a dramatic story with scammers.

#2: They show fake cart brands

GreenQueensDispensary_Mario_carts

They actually show several counterfeits of real brands too, but seem to make no distinction between real and fake. Now why shouldn’t they have only real brands? Because scam sites are not going by the true market; they’re going by what they see online. The fake and counterfeit vape cart brands are the ones getting spammed over and over on Instagram, so they’re more visible.

But hey, our old friends Mario carts, Cereal carts, Monopoly carts, and more! Haven’t seen these old boof brands around in months. And let’s not forget those Danks!

#3: They demonstrate blatant ignorance of the cannabis market

GreenQueensDispensary_Moonrocks

It’s interesting that the site shows a separate tab just for Moonrocks. We know that Dr. Zodiak’s Moonrocks is one of the oldest cart brands, now (to the best of our knowledge) long defunct, which were among the first to be counterfeited. We know that “moon rocks” are also a kind of cannabis flower offering which has been dipped in extract and rolled in kief. These seem to be a rare faddish trend that most cannabis fanciers avoid, as they’re usually sub-par buds. Compare the day-old steak at the grocery store where the butcher counter repackaged it with sauce, seasoning, and veggies as a shish-kabob or something.

So why the weird grouping and pricing? It makes no sense to charge such high rates for second-rate bud that’s been rolled around in leftover sauce and dust, definitely not side-by-side with a years-outdated vape cart brand.

Further down on the same page, there’s one selection just called “buy weed.”

GreenQueensDispensary_buy-weed

This photo is a plain old bag of nugs, displayed exactly like you would find at a pop-up underground sesh. But why have them specifically on the “Moonrocks” page? What we’re seeing here is people with no actual knowledge of the cannabis industry, possibly not even speaking English. They are just cobbling things together out of copy-and-pasted text run through Google.

#4: Cartoon mascot logos are the sure sign of a scam outfit

Let’s talk about cartoon mascots:

cartoon_mascot_scam_site

Your humble author works in the freelance field, so this is easily recognizable to me. You see a hundred jobs like this every time you go onto the graphics section of UpWork, or more likely Fiverr or whatever freelance marketplace. You used to see them on the old Rent-A-Coder.com market too.

In international criminal culture, scammers and spammers are mentally obsessed with this concept of a “cartoon mascot” and they specifically mean that, not a logo. Their cartoon mascots all look like this: a cartoon character shaped like whatever the product is, white Mickey-Mouse-style gloves, 1950’s era smiley face. It’s always dirt-cheap graphics work, done by third-world providers. As you can see with the image we parody above in the banner and from the general look of the site, the graphics are all thrown-together mishmosh.

Every criminal subculture has its own quirky beliefs. Online spammers are unshakably convinced that a “cute” cartoon mascot will win us American idiots over and make us give them our money. This has created a cottage industry for cheap cartoon mascots across the board. There’s thousands of these, some as cheap as $10, money a legitimate professional graphics designer would not get out of bed for. What they’re actually doing is just ripping another design and copy-pasting elements together. This “vape cart man” was probably originally a spark plug for an equally scammy site about auto parts.

#5: Site details are sketch

Their address is listed as Vanir Tower in San Bernardino, California:

GreenQueensDispensary_Vanir_Tower

Now, San Bernardino would definitely be a likely place for a dispensary. But if you look it up on Google maps, the actual Vanir Tower happens to be a government building in the heart of downtown.

Vanir_Tower_Google_maps

That building houses the local branch of the IRS, a US probation and parole office, and the San Bernardino City Hall. No dispensary would set up shop in this building!

Meanwhile, “whois” info for the domain greenqueensdispensary.com was first created on March 6th, 2021, just ten days ago as of this writing.

In between then and now, they found time to spam our forum in now-deleted posts under a nickname that is now banned. THREE times! Of all the cannabis industry websites they could have picked to spam, we’re the one site that built our reputation on busting fakes and scams…

Isn’t that just adorable? If some people would only read.

Why we are not afraid of blowback

We mentioned at the top that we get the occasional fake cart brand, unregistered counterfeit business, Internet scammer, and other lowlife writing us emails. These communications urge us to retract our bad press about them. They range from pleading and begging, to threatening us with lawyers and then just plain threatening us without lawyers.

I already responded to the fake cart brands in my classic unhinged rant “if we get your brand mistaken for fake, IT’S YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT!” Sometimes you just have to get it off your chest, you know?

So we have gotten a series of snivels from the scam website TKOExtracts.org. As we already point out, the real TKO company is at TKO PRODUCTS DOT COM, not “dot org,” and they do not sell any carts at all anymore, just edibles. They pretty much gave up on the cart market after the counterfeits flooded the earth.

The_Critic_it_stinks

Here’s why we don’t respond to threats or pleas when it comes to scammers: We are a REVIEW website. We function in the position of consumer advocacy. Just like movie reviewers are free to say a movie stinks, we are within our full First Amendment rights if we say your cartridge oil tastes like camel piss. That’s what a REVIEW site does! Unacademy for PC

We also have the public’s safety and well-being in mind. The vape-lung epidemic is still a real thing, people are still dying from it and many more are in the hospital, even though COVID-19 has obliterated all other medical news off the media. Kids as young as 15 are dying from it. So we have the world’s most solid good-faith argument, which is why we’re not afraid of being taken to court.

Luckily, we enjoy enough popularity that for every sour apple in the bunch, we get hundreds of readers thanking us for our commitment and hard work. And what the heck, sometimes our “tough love” puts the dodgy brands back on the straight and narrow. Look how Big Chief is doing these days, after all the times we kicked them around.

Readers, that was your bedtime story!

Take-aways:

Every time you see a website which offers to ship THC carts, they are a scam.

Do not give them money, in any form.

Report them to the FBI. Online Crime Complaint Center right there.

Buy your THC from licensed providers. We have contact lists to find the licensed retailers in every US state, in a handy list.

As always, thank you for keeping us informed and up to date about online scams! You have all saved other people potentially millions of dollars, if our math is right. Drop by our forum and give us a whistle.

Terpenes and Cannabis : Twenty Facts That Will Surprise You

0
terpenes_and_cannabis

Once upon a time, before marijuana was legalized at all in North America, the public knew one thing and only one thing about the active compounds in the plant: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC gets you high, full stop, the only “active ingredient” most of us heard of.

Since legalization began, research has jumped down the long rabbit hole that is the complex chemical makeup of everyone’s favorite weed. It turns out that marijuana is composed of dozens of organic compounds, which we are just beginning to investigate. So far we’ve uncovered 113 cannabinoids and 120 terpenes in various strains of cannabis. This makes pot one of the richest known plants for concentration and variety of terpenes, as well as potentially significant psychoactive compounds, cannabinoids included.

Our DabConnection staff has been fielding questions about terpenes for a while now. They’re coming in from mail, comments, forum posts, and random people stopping us at dispensaries. We decided to put our research hounds on the job to help clear up some of the deepest mysteries about terpenes.

Gelato vape details

1) How important are terpenes to the cannabis experience?

Very important! THC, CBD, Delta 8 THC, and other cannabinoids by themselves are almost completely odorless and tasteless. The terpenes contribute the aroma and flavor of cannabis products. An isolated cannabinoid will give you the effect of just that cannabinoid, like a prescription medicine. Terpenes act in conjunction with cannabinoid compounds to deliver a fuller effect.

The difference is just like the difference between taking a vitamin C tablet and eating an orange. The orange has a full organic compound profile which works in conjunction with the vitamin C. Plus, the tablet is highly processed, which causes the vitamin C to lose some of its potency. There may be some similar effect with processing compounds in cannabis.

But the bottom line is: try some pure THC or CBD, then try some in a more natural concoction that includes a terpene profile. You will notice the difference in a blindfolded test!

2) Do terpenes alone get you high?

No they do not, at least not the psychoactive effect we speak of from THC. When we talk about a “high,” we mean the combination of euphoria, gratification, tranquility, stimulation, and other mental effects.

However, this is not to say that terpenes play no role in the mental state you experience from cannabis! By themselves, some terpenes have a mild mental effect including stimulation, arousal, or sedation. Some of the better-known ones are:

  • Myrcene – sedating, relaxing, enhances THC effects

  • Linalool – sedating, calming

  • Pinene – alertness, memory retention

  • Limonene – stress relief, mood elevator

Terpenes are part of why cannabis is recommended for psychological maladies such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and mood or stress disorders.

You can easily prove to yourself that terpene effects don’t get you high, because all the psychoactive terpenes are also found in other plants. Mangoes have myrcene, citrus fruits have limonene, and the spice basil contains pinene. Go ahead, have yourself a big mango and orange fruit salad seasoned with basil. You may feel better, since your body just got a shot of fresh fruit with all its vitamins and antioxidants. You may even be in a jolly mood. But would you describe that as a “high”? Probably not.

I highly recommend this if you’re looking for quality and tasty CBD.

3) Does CBD oil have terpenes?

CBD (cannabidiol), by itself, is just one of the many cannabinoids in pot. CBD can be derived from hemp or cannabis proper, both of which also have terpenes. Depending on the extraction process, CBD can include terpenes or not. Most CBD products will now list on the label whether they contain terpenes or other cannabinoids as well. Any product advertised as “full spectrum” will generally include terpenes too.

But CBD by itself can be made completely terpene-free. In fact, it’s even possible to make synthetic CBD oil, no cannabis plant involved.

delta 8 thc cartridge
OG Kush provides a more dense, weed flavor.

4) Are there terpenes in Delta 8?

Like CBD oil, Delta 8 THC is a stand-alone cannabinoid. Delta 8 has effects similar to THC (properly called “delta 9 THC”), but far milder. As with CBD, delta 8 has its own cult following as an alternative cannabis derivative product, thanks to its more legalized status and preferred effect for some medical and therapeutic applications.

Delta 8 products, especially vapes, will usually list the terpenes on the label if they contain them. Keywords like “full spectrum” or “naturally extracted” also apply.

Decriminalization_marijuana

5) Are terpenes by themselves legal?

Of course! Terpenes are found throughout nature, in almost every known plant. Terpenes are legal in not just the US, but around the world. It would be pretty impossible to outlaw terpenes – we’d all starve to death!

drug_dog

6) Can drug-sniffing dogs be fooled by botanical terpenes?

Yes they can! The main component of cannabis which drug-sniffing dogs go by is beta-caryophyllene (the same as caryophyllene, but more of a proper name). This same terpene is also found in black pepper, cloves, oregano, basil, rosemary, hops, and so on.

While we can’t find any evidence of drug-sniffing dogs being thrown off by somebody toting the whole spice rack around in their luggage, there is a claim that 75% of the time when a drug dog triggers, it’s a false positive. This is actually more likely due to the fact that drug dogs can smell residue. Frequently they will trigger off currency because it’s so common to use a rolled-up note to snort powders. Keep weed in your cargo shorts for a week, then remove it and wear the shorts while you go have a dog sniff you – they will still trigger!

Ethan_Russo

7) Is the entourage effect proven now?

The entourage effect, which is the full-body effect from cannabis products, has been widely verified by generations of users. Terpenes are the most common cited cause of the entourage effect. But due to cannabis’ prohibition, scientific research was hampered. Now that laws are loosening, scientists are looking into this, but so far we don’t have 100% conclusive experimental proof. We do, however, have some strong theories.

The main man to talk to is Ethan Russo, a neurologist who is also the founder and CEO of CReDO Science, a company dealing in cannabis products. Russo asserts in interviews that “experiments support certain of these physiological effects [of terpenes], ideally, in clinical trial work.” Russo has a full paper published at NCBI, on “The Case for the Entourage Effect and Conventional Breeding of Clinical Cannabis.”

Dr. Jordan Tishler, Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, states in interviews that “the entourage effect is real” and that this “also explains why pure THC is not particularly effective, and whole-plant cannabis is better.”

This Science Direct paper is perhaps the final word we have presently, stating “Some cannabis phytomolecules interact, causing enhanced biological activity. Defining this phenomenon, known as the ‘entourage effect’, is one of the leading challenges in the field of research.”

One famous study treated epilepsy patients with either pure CBD or full spectrum CBD with terpenes and found better response in the full-spectrum group. That is a sign that something could be at work, but still not considered conclusive until we separate all the contributing ingredients.

So: Research is ongoing, but science is slow. Note also that research into the entourage effect sometimes focuses on different cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.) working together rather than isolating the terpenes’ effects. Let’s put it this way: We mentioned at the top “113 cannabinoids and 120 terpenes” are found in cannabis (and counting!). Now to do exhaustive research, we have to test each individual compound to see what effect it has, then isolate and test a pair of compounds to see if they have an enhanced effect, then repeat these steps for every possible pair of all 233 compounds! Even if the entire world pitched in on this research, it would not be done overnight.

medical-research

8) Is there confirmed medical research showing the benefits of terpenes?

That is a far easier question to answer. Yes, there’s plenty of confirmation into benefits of individual terpenes in experiments controlled against placebos. This applies not just to cannabis, but to the plant kingdom at large. Various terpenes have been known to be effective as insect repellant, antifungal agents, antibacterial agents, anesthetics, and cancer-fighting drugs.

Results on individual cannabis terpenes, however, may differ. Some are proven, some are still in clinical trials, and some don’t seem to do much.

Eucalyptol

9) Are there any harmful terpenes?

Remember that terpenes are found in plants throughout nature. There are some plants, such as toxic and poisonous species, which are proven harmful. As for terpenes in cannabis, very few if any could be said to have outright harmful effects, at least not in the concentrations we see in cannabis.

However, as in all of nature, effects change when we scale the dosage. If you just concentrate one terpene into pure form, there can be damage potential. The most common harmful effect from terpenes is flammability – pinene and carene are both components of turpentine. Meanwhile, eucalyptol is lethal at high doses, but we’re talking about a third of a pound of pure eucalyptol consumed at once. You’d have to smoke roughly a truckload of weed in one sitting to get close to that dosage.

Several users do report allergic reactions to some terpenes, including some found in cannabis, like linalool. As for vaping, some studies have suggested that vaping terpenes releases trace amounts of toxic chemicals. But you could say the same for burning a pile of autumn leaves.

Keep in mind that marijuana has been cultivated since 500 BC, in continuous usage since then, with so far a mortality rate of zero. So at least within bounds of normal consumption, if there were anything deadly in it, we would have found it by now.

essential-oils

10) Aren’t terpenes just “essential oils”?

At least most terpenes fall into the same category as essential oils.

It is unfortunate that so many years of pseodoscience and quackery have given plant-based compounds a bad rap. Let us be mindful of the fact that much of our medicine comes from natural plants in the first place. Like anything in nature, essential oils and terpenes can be misapplied. For example, there is consistent quackery around vitamin D, but just because somebody makes outrageous claims for it does not mean that vitamin D does nothing.

There are, indeed, suspicious claims going around about terpenes and other cannabis-derived products as well. For example, that CBD bathbombs fad that was going around turned out to not have much science supporting it.

On the positive side, sometimes a long-standing claim is eventually proven out. Chamomile, which shares the terpene bisabolol with cannabis, has a long-standing tradition in folk medicine. When modern science came along to test the beneficial claims, many of them were cast into doubt but a few of them were proven true.

We here at DabConnection are careful not to make unfounded health claims for or against cannabis. When we do refer to a health claim, either we link to a reasonably scientific source to back it up, or we identify a claim as unproven. All consumers of cannabis products should likewise maintain healthy skepticism. Cannabis derivatives have been proven effective in some medical applications, but that does not make cannabis a panacea.

why-does-my-vape-taste-bad

11) Why do botanical terpenes taste worse than cannabis terpenes?

Extraction of any plant-based compound is never a completely sterile business. Many terpenes are extracted through simple means such as steaming and distilling. Inevitably, some flavor from the source plant carries over. So while some weed strains are appreciated for having a peppery taste, it’s not as nice when the caryophyllene comes from actual pepper.

Botanical terpenes typically have an off flavor, reminiscent of an herbal vape, and are often harsh on the throat besides. Natural cannabis terpenes at least hit more like pot, because they are pot.

marijuana-smell

12) Are terpenes responsible for marijuana’s strong, pungent odor?

Yes indeed! In fact, terpenes across the plant kingdom are the cause for many plants’ aromas and flavors. Pinene, common to cannabis and pine trees, is a strong component of the sap of trees in the conifer family and is responsible for that “fresh pine” smell. Terpenes in general are also widely used in the perfume industry, precisely because they carry so much of their source plants’ signature aromas.

cali stripe live rosin batter review

13) What extraction method is best for preserving the full spectrum of cannabis?

Live resin and rosin are so far the preferred methods of cannabis extraction for preserving the plant’s full spectrum effects.

plant_insects

14) What is the purpose of terpenes in the first place?

In nature, plants evolved terpenes, alkaloids, and other organic compounds to serve many roles, chief among them moderating their interactions with other wildlife. Many terpenes double as effective insect repellant or anti-microbial agents, chasing away harmful pests and fungi. Some plants exhibit a nasty taste or odor to ward off herbivores who would otherwise graze on the plant and destroy it before it had reached maturity.

However, there are nearly as many cases where terpenes serve a function to attract wildlife selectively. The familiar smell of freshly-mowed grass, for instance, is a chemical “distress signal” which attracts predators of grazing herbivores. And of course, the sweet scent of flowers is attractive to more than just humans. It’s also there to attract pollinating insects which the plant depends upon to reproduce.

So the question is more “what purpose don’t terpenes serve?” Each plant species has its own unique strategy to promote its survival, and chemical production is the first line of defense.

Weed_Mango

15) Do mangoes have some effect with cannabis terpenes?

Yes, that’s been confirmed for a long time. Mangoes share the terpene myrcene with cannabis. Myrcene binds to some of the same receptors that cannabinoids do, resulting in a more pronounced entourage effect. For best results, eat mango about 45 minutes before vaping or smoking marijuana. All this really does is make the buzz a bit more mellow and relaxing.

face_serum

16) Are terpenes effective in topicals or aromatherapy?

In the case of topical application, which means applying it externally, some terpenes do have therapeutic effects such as being anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, or acting as a healing or anesthetic agent. Recall above that some plants produce terpenes as an anti-fungal measure. Well, guess what we use in ointments to treat fungal infections?

There is a lot more skepticism about aromatherapy. Conventional wisdom is that it’s pure baloney. A lot of aromatherapy has become tied up in New Age alternative medicine, to the point where it speaks of “eliminating toxins” and “toning and firming the body.” Not a smidgen of scientific evidence for this class of claim exists, and it would be ludicrous to think that merely inhaling a scent can make you thin! The chief argument against aromatherapy is not that the terpenes do nothing, but that merely inhaling them from a distance is too weak of a dosage.

The bottom line for aromatherapy is that for every claim that has some slight merit, there’s ten more that are just bunk. As we mention before, it’s good to preserve some skepticism and check out claims for yourself. It’s pretty easy to verify that cannabis helps stimulate the appetite and overcome nausea for cancer chemotherapy patients. That is miles away from suggesting that anything in cannabis cures cancer.

mango-allergy

17) Are there any terpenes with bad side effects?

As with any plant-based compound, results will vary from one individual to the next. Just as some people experience a bad taste from cilantro due to a genetic issue, some people can experience bad reactions to cannabis or any of its derivatives.

Quite a few terpenes can trigger allergic reactions, such as linalool, which is found in both cannabis and lavender. Check the individual terpene’s studies for possible adverse effects.

miracle_cure

18) Are there miracle drugs waiting to be discovered in terpenes?

Let’s not say “miracle,” but you could very well support the claim that future cannabis research has the potential to unlock more medical applications. We have just been delayed from research by decades of prohibitory laws. As we mention above, there’s over 230 organic compounds in cannabis, some of which we didn’t know existed until just a few years ago. With what we’ve found so far, cannabis shows promise as a source of many useful compounds. However, remember that terpenes are not unique to cannabis, so most terpenes in cannabis have had more research from other source plants already.

vaping

19) Does vaping give the full effect of terpenes?

The answer varies depending on the temperature and terpene. Terpenes are effective when activated in the range from the low 200s F to the high 300s F. But provided you’re vaping the right temperature, it can be a more effective way to consume terpenes than smoking.

skepticism

20) Are terpenes just a lot of hype?

Terpenes are definitely the subject of hype right now!

It was inevitable that this would happen. You take a benevolent drug enjoyed by generations since the dawn of agriculture, outlaw it for a near-millennium, and then slowly legalize it gradually after realizing its medical applications. Of course people are going to be spun into a frenzy about it!

There is something to terpenes and they are a fascinating aspect of cannabis, but there’s a lot more news coming out about the organic components of the hemp family besides. They are an enjoyable part of the cannabis experience with their own therapeutic applications in some cases, but perhaps they have been the subject of too much attention after being shunned for so long.

Klutch Dabtabs Update and Vaporizer Review – Innovative and Impressive

klutch dabtabs vaporizer review

This is an update for the Dabtabs review, and specifically the new Vari vaporizer. I tried Dabtabs a few months ago now, and right from the beginning, I have really liked them.

Pros:

  • 100% Cannabis derived cannabinoids and terpenes
  • Innovative, almost no mess concentrate option in Dabtabs
  • It’s much easier to track usage and see how much you have left, in contrast to traditional concentrates.
  • Others have had success using a regular banger and torch, but I just never got the hang of that, so I haven’t tried it myself.
  • State maximum allowed THC percentage (70%)

Cons:

  • High prices at most dispensaries, but some places have them for much less.  Sadly, I think this is a sign that they are not going to carry them anymore.

Recommendations:

They are convenient and easy to use. I don’t have to worry about storing them properly, right side up, like regular concentrates, and you can even just tape a label on each little bottle and stick them in your pocket. The Shatterizer Dabtabs Edition has a nifty little case that attaches by a magnet to the bottom of the battery. It can hold a few Dabtabs.

I am beyond grateful that Natalie at ILO sent me and a couple of others their new Vari vaporizer to review, and that she helped us do a giveaway, for the Dabtabs subreddit that I made, which is just reddit.com/DabTabs. There are definitely pros and cons to both of the Dabtab vaporizers that I own.

klutch dabtabs vaporizer

Dabtabs Basics

Dabtabs is an innovative Cannabis concentrate product, where a tiny piece of ceramic, that they call a “Dablet” is infused with Cannabis concentrate.  In this case, the Klutch brand uses strain-specific full-spectrum CO2 oil, from their own top-shelf Cannabis flower.  Klutch is one of the most popular Cannabis brands here in Ohio, and they have some of the most popular strains too.  Each jar, here in Ohio, contains 17 “Dablets”, and each one is infused with 50 mg of Cannabis concentrate.

You just shake a dablet out of the little jar and load it into your device.  I use this vaporizer called a Shatterizer dabtabs edition.  Mine came with an extra glass top, an extra dabtabs atomizer, and even one standard Ctech atomizer for regular concentrates.  I’ve read that people have success with using dabtabs in standard bangers and also eRigs like the Puffco Peak, but I’ve just stuck with the Shatterizer, because it’s easy to use and it pumps out the vapor.

Cannabis-derived terps

I’ve been using Dabtabs for the last few months now, and I still absolutely love them! I’ve only been using the Shatterizer Dabtabs Edition vaporizer, and recently I got this Vari Vaporizer from ILO, the company that makes the Dabtabs. So far, I really like both vaporizers, but they both have their pros and cons.  I will start with the Shatterizer, because I’ve been using that for longer.

There is nothing to complain about when it comes to the Shatterizer, other than the glass top being a little bit fragile, and also the battery doesn’t last that long. I had my first glass top break one time when I removed it. That was definitely a fault, and a potentially dangerous one too. I really like the Ctech coil that they sent me for free as well. It can be annoying to use, especially when the coil is dirty, because you have to remove the screw top.

I really like how the Shatterizer has three heat settings, and it works great with Dabtabs and regular concentrates too. The Vari, on the other hand, is simpler than the Shatterizer, and it has a ceramic top that has a much smaller chamber and should provide much better flavor. I’ve tried it with both Dabtabs and standard concentrates, like live hash rosin and live resin sauce. They work great, but the Vari doesn’t get as hot as the Shatterizer. I really like how the Vari has the haptic feedback too.

I have a few kinds of live hash rosin, live resin sauce, and a bunch of Dabtabs, that I will review in a video, with both of these vaporizers.

One thing that I really love about these Klutch Dabtabs is that they make it so much easier to tell exactly how much you are using and how much you have left.  With conventional concentrates, you have to estimate how much you load each time, and how much you have left.  It’s much more difficult to judge how long traditional concentrates will last for me, compared to these Dabtabs.

Klutch Quality

Klutch is one of the most famous Cannabis brands here in Ohio if you look on the Ohio Marijuana subreddit or just look up Ohio Marijuana reviews, and for good reason. They have even recently started producing and selling their own live hash rosin and live hash rosin jam. They are only the second Ohio brand to offer rosin, from what I’ve seen and read.

I’m a believer in the Entourage Effect. I wish that Klutch would provide the terpene content for us. I can taste and smell the terpenes when I vaporize these Dabtabs, but it would be nice to know exactly which ones and how much there is in each strain. It’s great how each bottle of Dabtabs has the maximum allowed THC percentage and also the maximum days allowance of THC too. I know that when I first got my medical card here, I was appalled to see the 70% maximum THC limit for concentrates and vapes, but since I learned about the Entourage Effect, I definitely appreciate our options more.

Another quirk of note in our medical Cannabis system here is our “days allowance”. I won’t go into too many details, but basically, one day’s worth of THC in a concentrate or vape cart is 590 mg. This means that you will often see carts and concentrates that have 0.85 grams, or 850 mg of oil because 70% of that is right at the one-day maximum. There are also full-gram carts here, but they have lower THC content. They do not have too much over the 590 mg limit, and they just have more CBD or terpenes than the other 0.85 gram options.

I recently read that one brand here, Certified Cultivators Carts, actually adds Delta 8 THC, to bring down the Delta 9 percentage to the 70% allowed.  I thought that was interesting, but I don’t know how I feel about them only using delta 9, delta 8, and terpenes.  It seems like most people want a full spectrum option now, and would prefer the more standard CBD, CBG, CBN, and other minor cannabinoids that are in the actual flower.

Who would enjoy this?

I think that any fan of Klutch would really enjoy these Dabtabs, but you should get either the Shatterizer Dabtabs edition, new Vari Vaporizer, or I’ve read that they work well in e rigs, like the Puffco Peak.

Good flavor and effects!

I really enjoy all of the Klutch products I’ve tried so far. I wish they listed the terpenes on their labels.  From looking online, it says that their Sunday Driver has Limonene, Caryophyllene, Linalool, and Pinene.  Their Orange 43 has Terpinolene, Myrcene, Limonene, and Pinene.  Klutch Super Lemon Dog has Ocimene, Farnesene, Myrcene, Terpinolene, Pinene, and Limonene.  I can’t find a Klutch OG Kush, but under their Josh D brand, they have terpenes as Limonene, Myrcene, Caryophyllene, and Linalool.

I recognized Limonene and Linaloool as the terpenes responsible for the citrus flavor and aroma of Limonene, and Linalool has a nice lavender scent and flavor.  A quick Google search shows that Humolene is the compound in hops, so it gives an earthy, spicy flavor and aroma.  Last, but not least, Caryophyllene is the compound found in black pepper, basil, and oregano, with a funky warmth similar to cinnamon and cloves.

These Dabtabs recreate the experience of vaporizing the actual Cannabis flower. I think they probably also leave behind some smell. It should dissipate quickly, but if you’re looking for a less conspicuous option, then maybe a distillate vape cart would be better.

klutch-dabtabs vaporizer close up

Similar Cannabis products for comparison:

I’m not sure if comparable products to these Dabtabs would be other concentrates or vape carts. With the Shatterizer Dabtabs Edition vaporizer, these Dabtabs are nearly as convenient as vape carts and actually are more convenient in some regards. You don’t have to worry about putting the Dabtabs in your pocket because you have to heat them up pretty high in order for the CO2 oil to have anything happen to it.  Also, with the Shatterizer, you have to be careful not to tilt it too far in one direction, because the Dablet will fall out of the atomizer.

It usually sticks to the inside of the glass top, from the reclaim that’s building up in there, and I just have to take off the top and pull out the Dabtab and put it back. I think that people would really like these Dabtabs, if they gave them a chance and also have the right hardware. They offer a quick, easy, no-mess way to enjoy the top shelf Cannabis strains that I know and love. Since I’ve found them for an affordable price, they have quickly become a favorite of mine.

Conclusion

These Klutch Dabtabs are great! I still love this Shatterizer Dabtabs edition vaporizer, and I definitely think that the Vari has its uses too. I do wish that it could get a little bit hotter, to use with Dabtabs, but I do really like using it with standard concentrates so far. It’s amazing how much vapor you can get from such a tiny piece of ceramic. It is a pain that you need the right device in order to enjoy these Dabtabs, but from my experience, it’s worth it.

I will definitely try out Vari’s more portable features. So far, I have just been leaving both of these at home, and just bringing a vape cart or something like that with me, when I am on the go.

Vape Cartridge Discoloration : What To Know

0
discolored_carts

In the few years since vape cartridges have become popular for both nicotine and THC vapers alike, many alert users have noticed an odd phenomenon: vape oil turning different colors inside the cartridge. Ever since the vape lung health epidemic, vape users are especially wary of vape oil that appears to have something wrong.

We’ll give you a complete guide to cannabis products vape oil discoloration here to the best of our present research. Through this guide, you’ll hopefully know when and when not to be concerned.

Bottom line: Some discoloration is normal, more is a problem

Vape oil comes from the cannabis plant and other sometimes hemp, or plants in the case of botanical terpenes. Like any organic compound, these various cannabinoids, terpenes, and other bioactive chemical agents can be affected by a number of factors. Chiefly, vape oil can discolor due to any of these reasons:

  • Time – Vape cartridges actually have a shelf life! Over time, the oil in a cartridge left to sit will just change on its own due to oxidization
  • Temperature – Heat is the number one factor in most chemical changes
  • Sunlight – Like any extract from plant matter, sunlight can affect it
  • Moisture – Plain old water vapor can also play a role in breaking down organic compounds
  • Contamination – Other agents such as mold, mildew, bacteria, or invasive chemicals or additives, can all affect the appearance of the oil

So, to avoid cartridge discoloration and protect the ingredients of your cartridges, you should store them in a cool, dry, place out of direct sunlight. By “cool” we mean normal home temperature. A drawer in your air-conditioned home is ideal. However, do NOT freeze a cartridge! Not only will this cause moisture to form inside, but taking a cartridge from the freezer to vape it can cause it to heat up too fast and break.

Experienced coffee drinkers know the drill: Treat vape cartridges like coffee beans and they’ll stay fresh longer.

The ordinary electric lighting in your room should have no effect, as the light that can break down your ingredients is UV radiation from sunlight. However, you’re still better off keeping your cartridges in the dark if you use tanning beds or sunlamps, or have windows nearby.

As for the time factor, this varies. Extracts (for dabbing) last three to six months when properly stored. Vape carts may last up until one year.

See also: This comprehensive study on “Long-Term Storage and Cannabis Oil Stability.”

What does vape oil discoloration mean?

Most of the time, cart oil changing color is a sign that the oil is losing its potency. THC and THCA may degrade into to CBN or delta 8 THC. Delta 8 THC has a decreased psychoactive effect while CBN does next to nothing at all. This process is most commonly caused by sunlight and oxydization.

Furthermore, terpenes can also be separately affected by the same environmental factors. For instance, humulene has a boiling point of only 223°F (106°C), while also reacting quickly with ozone in direct sunlight. So the terpenes can be affected even if the THC is still potent, resulting in less flavor and entourage effects.

So it’s not like an older cartridge showing discoloration is going to hurt you. It is, however, likely to lose its potency.

Discoloration happens more often when you buy a cartridge on sale!

Let’s think this one over: Your local dispensary has a sale going on a cartridge brand. More likely than not, this is because the carts are going to expire soon. Dispensaries, like any retail business, have to manage their inventory and be careful not to overstock. When a brand doesn’t sell as fast as they’d hoped, they have extra sitting around and when that batch is getting near the end of its shelf life, they price it to move.

Some dispensaries might also be less aware of how cartridges are handled. So they might have carelessly left a case in the sun too long or transported it in a hot van, and other mishaps. Some dispensaries might have inexperienced employees that don’t know better. So if you add these affects together, an improperly stored and handled cartridge that’s six months old might deteriorate further than a year old cartridge that has been properly stored.

Cartridge discoloration affects all cannabis and hemp by-products

Not only THC vapes, but CBD and delta 8 vapes, can also become discolored. In most cases, the best color for cartridge oil is a transparent hue of light yellow or amber color, close to the shades of lemonade to honey. Some vape oils, particularly delta 8 THC cartridges, are as clear and colorless as water.

Things to watch out for in vape cart oil:

  • Darkening
  • Banding or stripes
  • Gradient color (darker at the top, clearer at the bottom)
  • Cloudiness
  • Crystals
  • Specks or grit floating in it
  • Bitter or sour taste
  • Extremely harsh on the throat when vaping

One rule of thumb is that if it looks extremely weird or tastes nasty, there’s probably something wrong with it. Logically, any full-spectrum cannabis derivative should have some marijuana flavor to it. With experience you can quickly tell when something is off.

Things to never do with a cartridge:

  • Leave it in the car on a hot summer day
  • Leave it on a sunny windowsill
  • Carry it around in your pocket, since that is also warmer than 70°
  • Keep it in the freezer (this is bad for coffee too, which is where this urban myth comes from)
  • Store it someplace damp or frequently moist like a sauna, poolhouse, bathroom, or greenhouse
  • Leave it sit for a whole year
  • Leave it sit attached to the battery for an extended time of weeks or more
  • Vape at too high a temperature

If you do have to transport vape carts on your person or in your car on a regular basis, consider investing in a carrying case. Carrying them in an external pocket, such as a coat pocket or tote bag, is preferable to cramming them in your jeans pocket.

Readers, share your other safe handling tips – or horror stories about mishandled cartridges – in the comments or in our forum.

Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol : Health Effects

0
Vegetable_Glycerin_and_Propylene_Glycol

In the cartridge vaping world for both THC-based and nicotine-based vapes, two chemicals have risen to lead the controversy over vape ingredients. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG) are still commonly used ingredients in many products. But what are the effects of vaping these two additives, and how can we nail down conclusive research?

The bottom line is that we simply don’t know that much yet. But we will post the latest findings and readers can draw their own.

Propylene_Glycol

What are Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol?

Both of these chemical agents are widely used in many industries. Both of them are composed of the atoms carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Both of them are common components of “e-liquids,” used as a carrier to inhale the payload (nicotine / THC / etc.) and for their vapor-producing properties.

Both are classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as generally recognized as safe (GRAS). HOWEVER, that applies to uses in food, cosmetics, medicines, etc. There is relatively little research on their effects when vaporized and inhaled. Water is “generally recognized as safe” too, but you don’t want it in your lungs.

(spoilers: get used to that word “however,” it comes up a lot in this topic)

Take note, this is NOT about other harmful fillers like the notorious vitamin E acetate and other cutting agents which have led to vaping-related lung injuries. Nor is this about terpenes, relatively harmless organic compounds found in most plants. This is just about the two additives vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol.

ecigs_vs_cigs

Safety research is inconclusive either way

One problem we run into in researching additive safety is context, because most media outlets refuse to differentiate between “electronic cigarettes” and vaping literally anything else, including CBD, live cannabis resin, and delta 8.

Another problem is that the media and medical establishment often report on this issue in the context of comparing “e-cigarettes” to smoking actual cigarettes. Since the media has spent decades dramatizing the dangers of smoking to the point where one would assume that “people who don’t smoke will never die,” reporters are reluctant to say that vapes have harm factors as well.

Cancer Prevention Research published a 2019 study: “Vaping propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine may lead to lung inflammation.” The conclusion was that people who vaped had higher concentrations of chemicals associated with lung inflammation. HOWEVER, the study itself concedes that this was a small and inconclusive test.

Journal of Clinical Investigation published a 2019 study: “PG/VG in ecigs tied to lung damage in well-done experiment.” HOWEVER, that study was only done on mice. Again, inhaling VG/PG vapor was tied to damaged chemistry of the lungs, but not significant.

For an argument from the other side, this study of Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes finds PG, VG, and vaping ingredients in general to be “practically non-toxic.” HOWEVER, the study only concerns exposure “orally or intravenously” and “from dietary or occupational exposures.” There is very little information on the health effects of vaping.

You can of course find several articles studying the safety of VG from the vendor’s perspective. This Canadian vaping source settles the matter at “The chemical was flagged as a low human health priority.” HOWEVER, that site is geared more towards helping smokers quit smoking by turning to vapes instead.

chemistry_interactions

Vaping these agents produces chemical byproducts

For an example of how the rules change when temperature changes occur, tests have detected that vaporizing any common vaping agent produced acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and acrolein in measurable amounts. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) produced the most, followed by propylene glycol (PG), with vegetable glycerin (VG) and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) producing the least.

However, all of the above were only found in trace amounts and, again, are only noted as potentially harmful in these amounts, but not assumed harmful in this context. For comparison, you encounter aceteldehyde every time you take a bite of ripe fruit, and inhale acrolein every time you fry bacon.

Formaldehyde is the only ringer, as a known carcinogen, but only in large amounts. For comparison, formaldehyde is a frequently used food preservative, and is also produced naturally by the human body itself.

Glycerol

Other uses of Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol

Vegetable glycerin (VG) commonly goes by the name of Glycerol, and sometimes is modified to Glycerin. Glycerol and propylene glycol have traditionally been used as:

    • a food additive – as a solvent, sweetener, and preservative
    • first aid and medicine – as an mildly antimicrobial and antiviral agent
    • personal lubricants – for its topical properties
    • antifreeze – it disrupts the formation of ice crystals
    • chemistry – for one thing, glycerol is a component of nitroglycerin
    • other industry – vibration damping, water effects, fog machines, diesel fuel component

While none of this is that helpful to tell us anything about vaping, it does makes the argument that we’ve been using vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol for years in a number of industries and so far nobody’s dropping dead (except for when you add nitrogen to make nitroglycerin!).

For just one example, the commercial personal lubricant K-Y Jelly contains both glycerin and propylene glycol. K-Y Jelly was first introduced in the year 1904, so it’s been in use for over 100 years. Now when you consider all the people who have used it worldwide and all the orifices that have come in contact with it, with no ill effects being reported, that makes a strong case for lox toxicity. HOWEVER: Nobody has been going around vaping K-Y Jelly.

dumb_nerd_shit

Final conclusion?

We of course want to stay as safe as possible. There are extracts and distillates as alternatives if you want to go completely VG / PG free. But let’s face it: At some level, you are heating an element and inhaling it with your lungs, something nature didn’t design us to do all day. There’s bound to be problems with something somewhere.

At the same time, studying the health effects of literally anything is never straightforward. Too much of anything will kill you, including nicotine (60 mg), caffeine (10 g), and drinking water, which is why we have sports drinks with electrolytes.

We will monitor this topic and update this post as more results come in. We are still at the dawn of vaping, so we may have to wait a generation or two before we find out. Look how long it took us to figure out smoking.

Trifecta Relax Cart Review: A Light, Relaxing Experience

trifecta relax cartridge

Here we have the Trifecta Relax Cartridge made by Bay Stay Hemp company. These full gram cartridges contain Delta 8 THC, CBD, hemp-derived terpenes, and other cannabinoids. Furthermore, these carts deliver a smooth and mellow experience, not as intense of a high, but more relaxing and slight effects.

Pros:

  • Very smooth and light hits
  • CCELL hardware, effective cartridge
  • Flavorful taste
  • Not harsh

Cons:

  • Not very potent, won’t give you strong effects
  • Currently, only one strain found for these cartridges

Recommendation: Have higher levels of Delta 8 THC, and provide more strains.

Trifecta Relax cartridge delivers smooth and tasteful hits, light effects

trifecta relax
Being infused with CBD and Cannabinoids, Trifecta Relax is a lot more lighter than your typical D8 cartridge.

Seeing that this cartridge is infused with CBD, I assumed that it would hit a little lighter than cartridges filled with straight delta 8 distillate. And it sure did, Trifecta Relax cartridge delivers very soothing and mellow hits. A nice and light high, this cartridge is great if you enjoy CBD and want something only a little stronger than that.

Don’t get me wrong, you might feel some slight effects, but only after several hits. These cartridges are good if you just want a smooth experience with a light high. If you think Delta 8 gives a strong high, these carts give a much lighter high.

Delta 8 THC infused with CBD, cannabinoids, and hemp-derived terpenes

trifecta lab results
Trifecta carries authentic lab results done for pesticides, residual solvents, and terpenes. You can find their lab results on their official website here.

As shown above, Trifecta Relax cartridge contains not only D8 THC and CBD but also a full spectrum of cannabinoids. Like cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC), and cannabinol (CBN). This great blend delivers a much more relaxing high than a typical Delta 8 cartridge.

Along with this, the rest of the cartridge contains Linalool and Limonene hemp derived terpenes. This is what gives it its flavorful taste. Smooth and tasteful hits, these cartridges aren’t really as harsh as most D8 carts and distillate.

Oil Quality- Thin distillate and light strength

delta 8 cartridge
Fair oil quality and tastes clean, but the distillate itself is pretty thin.

Because the Trifecta Relax cartridge is infused with a variety of cannabinoids and terpenes, these cartridges have a much lower percentage of D8. Within their lab results, Trifecta cartridges only contain 8.5% Delta 8. This is much lower than most D8 cartridges I’ve tried, which contain up to 80-90% D8.

Furthermore, this cartridge won’t really give you a strong high at all. It’s more for someone who wants a lighter and smoother experience. As mentioned earlier, you may feel some slight effects, but you won’t get stoned off it. Regardless, this cartridge is still enjoyable to vape.

Trifecta Relax cartridge use CCELL hardware

delta 8 cbd
Being a CCELL cartridge, the Trifecta Relax cartridge delivers efficient and effective hits.

Trifecta delta 8 cartridges use authentic CCELL hardware for their cartridges. As with every CCELL cartridge, they deliver effective hits and nice clouds with the right battery and volts. I would say these cartridges are efficient, but because of how thin the oil quality is and how light it is, it is easy to smoke and finish. I finished nearly half of the cartridge in just a day, but I kept hitting it consistently.

Smooth and tasteful hits, more of a lime taste

As mentioned earlier, the terpenes infused with this cartridge is Linalool and Limonene. This blend of terpenes delivers a nice, lemony flavor. Not that strong of a taste, and doesn’t taste harsh at all. Not as sweet or dense of a flavor, but a smooth, light mix.

Value: Fair price, worth the experience, if into CBD and Delta 8 THC

The price for these cartridges goes for $35, which isn’t so bad depending on what you’re looking for. If you want a pure Delta 8 THC cartridge or something that will give you strong effects, then I’d recommend you view our best Delta 8 list. Simply because at this price, you have many options and even cheaper ones to pick from.

But if you’re looking for a cartridge that gives lighter effects than Delta 8, let alone Delta 9 or high-quality THC, then this is a good product for you. Because of how light the high actually is, it’s perfect if you want to feel a slight buzz. Or maybe you want to take a tolerance break and don’t want to full stop. Regardless, these cartridges do deliver a unique and interesting experience.

Overall, the Trifecta Relax cartridge delivers a unique and relaxing experience

Closing up the Trifecta review, these cartridges really do deliver an interesting experience. A great blend of terpenes, they deliver very smooth and tasteful hits. Again, not the strongest high you will get. But you may feel some slight, mellow effects. If you’re more into CBD, at this price you will enjoy these cartridges. Standard Oil Co Cart Review – Excellent All Around

standard oil co review

Here we review the Standard Oil Cartridge, in particular, the Lemon Slushie. We got this at Oasis dispensary in Las Vegas, Nevada, through a deal we found on Dankoil. Standard Oil Cartridge uses real cannabis terpenes, offers great strength, and uses quality hardware. So far the Standard Oil cartridge we have tried is one of the better distillate cartridges that are out there and that is why it made on our top carts for Nevada list.

Pros:

  • Excellent taste
  • Real cannabis terpenes
  • Quality hardware
  • Thick long-lasting consistent oil

Cons:

  • Not available everywhere

Recommendations: We would like to see this cart in more places. We would also like to see a live resin version.

standard oil co cart

Standard Oil Co cart hit all the points of a great cart

Here we will go through all the categories on the Standard oil carts. Overall it’s a great cartridge; if you are looking for a fast answer – you should just go and get it. Most likely you won’t be disappointed. We got this on a deal but we wouldn’t mind paying full price for this especially considering how strong it is.

Standard Oil uses CCELL or a very close clone

The cart used on this one looks very similar to the Tumbleweed extracts cartridge that we get quite often. I didn’t see CCELL marking on the bottom, but CCELL has changed some of the designs on their cartridge hardware. This does seem like a CCELL cartridge or a very close clone.

Tumbleweeds Extracts review

Standard Oil uses all-glass hardware with a ceramic core

This means that you will be getting top efficiency and nice hits. There is really nothing to complain about here regarding hardware even if it is a clone, which we can’t tell for sure.

Standard Oil Co cart delivers strength and is very energetic

The version we are reviewing here is a Sativa and it really delivers on the energy. You do not feel sleepy at all from this cart and I would say that this is one of the best cartridges I have hit so far. On top of that, the effects last for a long time. You don’t feel like you have to hit this every five minutes, as is often the case with Delta 8 carts or some of the weaker THC carts like Kings Garden and RAD Vape. For strength, there may not be many carts that are that much stronger out there.  Strength on Standard Oil Co carts is pretty comparable to some of the Roots and Cannavative carts out there, which have continuously been the strongest distillate brands we have tried out after multiple cartridges.

kings garden cartridge
kings garden cartridge has a nice light shade

Excellent taste with real cannabis terpenes

The Standard Oil Co cartridge uses real cannabis terpenes and nothing fake. This really reflects on taste. There is nothing off-tasting about it and it still does taste like the Lemonnade in the strain without tasting fake or artificial like the RAD Vape.

Definitely, one of the better tasting distillate cartridges out there, and it is better tasting than quite a few live resin carts out there.

Standard Oil Co has excellent oil quality.

The oil on these carts is really thick. You won’t see almost any movement from it since it’s that thick. It is close to the thickness of Roots and a little less thick than AMA thick distillate.

Nothing changed on oil consistency or the color as we went to the bottom of this cart. This one is actually so good, that I saved a bit for a friend to try it out.

standard oil cart in action

The thick oil gives a lot of puffs

Standard oil is so thick that you get a lot of puffs out of it. Compared to some of the thinner carts out there I might get an extra half a day’s use from this, and that’s coming from someone that gets about a day and a half or two from a standard THC cart. Overall there is nothing to complain about here about the number of puffs and it really excels here.

standard oil co details

Great value even better on a deal

When I picked this up at Oasis Cannabis in Las Vegas it was something like $25 with tax. I believe this costs around 35-40 dollars at most dispenseries and it’s definitely worth it. Comparing to some of the weaker cartridges, you might be getting twice the value, since you don’t have to hit this thing all the time to get the desired effects. I have noticed that for some low quality carts, you have to hit it five times as much and you are getting way less of a good value. These are a great value, whether you get them on a deal or if you are getting them at a standard price – provided you are not getting them in an extremely overpriced dispensary like Pisos.

Concluding our Standard Oil Co cart review…

Overall there is nothing to complain about the Standard Oil Co cartridge. The only thing I would like to see is a live resin version. The oil is thick, it tastes good, it’s strong and the effects last long. On top of that for the Sativa, it’s extremely energetic and you don’t feel you have to hit it all the time.

Cannabis-Friendly Ad Networks – Here is What is Available Now

0
cannabis_ad_networks

If you are reading this you are probably looking around to see what cannabis ad networks are out there. Here we will go through the current ones in detail and tell you which ones we think are the best and the worst. In short, currently, the Mantis Ad Network is the best cannabis ad network for publishers.

Currently here are the cannabis ad networks that are out there that we know of:

Ad Networks Designed For Cannabis

These ad networks are either targeted specifically to the cannabis industry by companies who realize the special needs of this market, or at least they specialize in highly regulated markets including the cannabis industry.

Ad_Networks_Mantis

Mantis Ad Network – Currently Our Top Pick

Mantis is a US-based cannabis ad network. It’s currently the most popular ad network for cannabis and CBD. It has many websites as part of its network including this site and Leafly, MedicalJane, GrassCity Forums, and more. Originally, the “420 Ad Network” was acquired by Mantis Ad Network and is now part of that same merged company. Mantis offers no intermediary fees and has been effective for both publishers and advertisers.

Review of Mantis Ad Network, Publisher Side

Currently, Mantis is our main network and the overall best. It pays the most, has the highest fill, and they take 0% commission, and pay 100% out to advertisers. Mantis’ platform allows you to manage your own ads.

Mantis Ad Network Website

Ad_Networks_CannBe

CannBe – A Close Second

CannBe is based in Israel and is our choice for the current second-best cannabis ad network. They run on a revenue share model that’s generous and publishers are assigned an account executive to help them with any support issues. They’re a media company founded by cannabis entrepreneurs.

Review of CannBe Ad Network, Publisher Side

We previously ran ads with both CannBe and Mantis, and at times CannBe had a higher average CPM. Additionally, CannBe backfills with their own sites and pays publishers for that as well.

CannBe Review, Publisher Side

Currently, we do not run CannBe ads because they did not have enough fill consistently for us to continue.

For a smaller volume site, CannBe may be a very good fit. We ran their network for about 4 months and they operate on a split fee agreement of ad revenue. Payments were fast with CannBe and a dedicated representative assists with any issues you might have.

Overall, CannBe is a great network and something we would consider running again once there is more fill alongside Mantis.

CannBe Website

As of 2023, CannBe is not operational. Their site is down.

Ad_Networks_Puff_Network

Puff Network – Fast Payouts, But Lower

Puff Network is based in Canada and has some high-level publishers including High Times and Skunk on its platform for publishers. As the name implies, it was founded with cannabis businesses in mind first.

Puff Network Review, Publisher Side

We ran Puff Network on this site for a few months and customer service is very fast and impressive. It’s also nice that you can cash-out anytime via PayPal and get paid quicker than some of the net terms of most other ad networks.

The downside of Puff Network is the CPM deteriorated over time and the payouts are overall lower than that of Mantis or CannBe.

Puff Network Website

As of 2023, Puff Network is not operational. Their site is down.

Ad_Networks_Traffic_Roots

Traffic Roots – Now More Ads On General Sites

Traffic Roots is a US-based cannabis ad network that received funding from Canopy Boulder. You can find a much more detailed rundown of Traffic Roots here. They deliver ads across cannabis and other sites and give advertisers the option to show traffic on adult networks as well.

Traffic Roots Review, Publisher Side

Unfortunately, Traffic Roots paid out the lowest rate of any cannabis ad network we tried. They also had a $250 minimum cashout, which is substantially more than any of the other cannabis ad networks. The overall CPM paid out several times lower than other cannabis ad networks.

Lately, it looks like Traffic Roots now also focuses on non-cannabis sites that still allow cannabis and CBD ads. For companies looking to advertise cheaper, but not necessarily targeted at cannabis alone, it might be a good option.

For those looking for more targeted cannabis and CBD traffic, the standard cannabis ad networks may be more effective.

Traffic Roots Website

Honorable Mentions

We haven’t tried the following sites, but they indicate that they may also be cannabis-friendly ad network and affiliate alternatives.

Kush Clicks Marijuana Ad Network

Kush Clicks is a US-based company that helps advertisers connect with publishers. It does not seem that this network actually takes any direct publishers but is more in the business of assisting advertisers, possibly with multiple platforms.

Kush Clicks Website

Healthy Ads

Healthy Ads is an ad platform that is shown across various health related sites. They accept both CBD and Medical Marijuana related ads.

Healthy Ads CBD Advertising Web Page

CannAffiliate

CannAffiliate bills itself as “affiliate marketing for the cannabis industry.” They accept dispensaries, cannabis brands, and CBD brands.

CannAffiliate website

CBDAffs

A specialized network that works just for the CBD sub-industry, including ingested products.

CBDAffs website

Adistry

A “lifestyle brands” advertising network that is tailored for the cannabis and CBD industries.

Networks that specifically ban cannabis products

You can rule out:

  • Google ads
  • Facebook and Instagram ads
  • Taboola
  • OutBrain
  • Clickbank

All of these specifically prohibit cannabis, marijuana, CBD, drugs in general, or “any illegal activity” even by other countries’ laws.

The topical CBD exception

All ad networks do allow hemp-derived topical CBD advertising. This means:

  • bath bombs
  • cosmetics
  • pet products
  • lotions
  • beauty care

Anything that is a non-ingested application (you do not eat it, drink it, smoke it, vape it, etc.). This is a really weird exception, and takes a lot of explaining. Since CBD is federally legal to sell (barring all the health claims restricted by the FDA), all CBD should be allowed. Word is still out on Delta 8, too.

Why is Digital Cannabis Advertising So Difficult?

In the US, cannabis is still federally illegal and will be until a major reform bill passes at the federal level through a House, Senate, and presidential approval. Individual states are legalizing anyway, at paces varying from “tentative limited medical use” to “smoke it in the street!”

Other than the US, only four countries in the world allow complete, unfettered recreational cannabis use: Canada, Uruguay, Georgia, and South Africa, and of those four, only Canada and Uruguay allow the sale of cannabis products (the others allow consumption but not free trade). Roughly one-third (???) of the other nations on Earth allow cannabis in some limited degree for medical purposes, personal use, or decriminalization.

Now, the Internet is a global market. This means, when you advertise on the Internet, you have far more to worry about than your own country’s laws. True, your country may let you post whatever the heck you want on the Internet… and other countries can ban your website! Advertising networks want to be as global as possible because that increases the income pool for the ad network and its clients alike. So if an ad network takes the conservative approach and prohibits content that could be illegal in almost any country, they broaden their scope and increase potential revenue.

Not only does the cannabis industry fall into the grayest of legal gray areas right now, but it’s far from being the only controversial industry. Just for one example, here’s the list of prohibited content on Taboola, and the even longer list of partially allowed, but restricted content. Stuff like tobacco, prescription medications, and firearms are prohibited right out. There are even restrictions on dental products, cosmetics, and cryptocurrency! Beyond that, literally, every ad and its landing page is screened by personnel for quality, spamminess, and general edgy practices.

So cannabis is just too hard-core for the global ad market. You have to remember also that outside of international laws, advertising an edgy product causes other sponsors to drop out. There are products that don’t want to advertise on certain sites, and there are sites that don’t want certain products advertised there.

These same kinds of hangups are affecting other financial spheres of the cannabis industry, like banking and insurance. It’s one reason why your local dispensary still deals only in cash. Times may change later, but even if the US goes fully legal like Canada, digital marketing will always be weird for the cannabis industry, as is advertising for other adult-oriented products.
