We’re all about the dabbing here at DabConnection, but sometimes you want to experiment with a different way to consume cannabis. Weed pills are the last name in discreet consumption – no odor, nothing on your breath, and small enough to fit in your wallet.

How To Make Weed Pills

You will need:

  • Metric scale
  • Aluminum foil
  • Toaster oven
  • An oil (butter, coconut oil, or MCT oil)
  • Glass or beaker
  • Heat source (oven or hotplate-stirrer)
  • Strainer (cheesecloth or nut milk bag)
  • Empty pill capsules
  • Syringe (or dropper, anything to fill the capsules)

We will heat the flower without burning it in a process we call “decarbing.” Then we will extract the TCH from the flower into the oil. It’s a very similar process to how we make edible oil in our canna oil tutorial.

Weigh out the amount of flower you’re going to use

Here the scale shows seven grams, but by the end of the video, we see he has plenty of liquid left after filling 28 capsules, so maybe adjust the amount based on your capsule supply.

Wrap the flower in aluminum foil

You want to have enough foil laid out to make a nice tight envelope, with crimped edges all around.

Stick it in the toaster oven

John mentions here that an oven can be used too, but he likes the toaster oven, and he has a point. Toaster ovens are better for keeping a consistent temperature while baking small packages like this one. They also preheat faster. With an oven, there’s no sense in heating all that empty space just for a package the size of an envelope.

Set it at 250°F (121°C) for 45 minutes.

The thing that we’re doing is, we’re converting THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) into THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). By drying it, very fast. Instead of converting THCA in flower into THC by the simple process of burning it, we’re going to keep all the THC in the flower and extract it into the oil instead.

Mix the flower with oil

pouring coconut oil over decarbed buds

Remove the flower from the foil into a glass container. Pour enough of your oil over the flower to just cover it. You can use butter (?), coconut oil (better), or MCT oil (best), which is actually just processed coconut oil. The point is that it has to be a food-grade oil because you’re going to swallow this stuff. Penzoil 10-W-30 is not a good choice.

And of course, we have to use oil because THC is not water-soluble.

Heat the flower and oil mixture

There are two methods to do this:

heating THC extract

(a) Boil a pot of water on the stove, place the glass of oil+flower in the water, stir and heat 4-6 hours.

heating and stirring TCH extract

(b) Heat a hotplate stirrer to 110°C (230°F), pour the mixture into a beaker, drop in the magnetic stirrer, and let that stir and heat for six hours.

The second method is more fun because you don’t have to stir a glass for six hours.

Strain the oil

Remove the mixture from heat, let it cool down, and then strain it into another glass jar with either cheesecloth (OK) or a nutmilk bag (better). Nutmilk bags are used for making almond milk, but all we care about is straining the solid flower from the liquid oil. You can add an additional pass through a coffee filter for extra-fine straining.

Fill the oil into capsules

We’re reaching the “weed pills” step. Set up your capsules to be filled. You can punch holes in a cardboard box like in the video. If you don’t trust your hand-eye coordination, there are pill-filling rigs out there for this purpose.

And fill your syringe, pipette, dropper, or whatever with oil, fill the capsules with oil, and put the capsules back together.

It was a lot of trouble, but well worth it!

What we have here is a nice little gel cap, not that distinguishable from a vitamin-E capsule. You could even store them in a bottle labeled “vitamin THC” because that’s pretty much what it is now. Each capsule is about 5 mg of THC, but notice the air bubble makes some difference. Potency varies by how carefully you fill them.

Have you made your own weed pills?

  1. I specifically like CBD Isolate Crystals because they do not contain any THC so I have peace of mind in the case that I have to take a drug test for work, because I am I law enforcement.
