Cannabutter 101: A Dabber’s Guide

Cannabutter, the cornerstone of many a delicious edible experience, is a simple yet potent infusion. This guide will walk you through the process, from decarboxylation to delicious dishes.

What is Cannabutter?

Cannabutter is simply butter infused with cannabis. The fat in butter acts as a carrier for THC, allowing it to be ingested and metabolized by the body.  

How to Make Cannabutter

1. Decarboxylation:

  • Why it’s crucial: Decarboxylation is the process of converting THCA (the inactive form of THC in the plant) into THC, the psychoactive compound that produces the desired effects.
     
  • The Method: Preheat your oven to 245°F (118°C). Spread your ground cannabis evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring every 10-15 minutes to ensure even heating.  

2. Infusion:

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 cup unsalted butter
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 cup ground, decarboxylated cannabis
  • Instructions:
    • Melt the butter: Gently melt the butter and water in a saucepan over low heat.
    • Add cannabis: Once melted, add the decarboxylated cannabis to the pot.
    • Simmer: Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Maintain a temperature between 160-200°F (71-93°C).
    • Strain: Carefully pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a jar. Discard the plant matter.
    • Chill: Refrigerate the jar to allow the butter to solidify.

3. Using Cannabutter

  • Versatility: Cannabutter can be used in any recipe that calls for regular butter.
    • Baking: Brownies, cookies, cakes, muffins, etc.
    • Cooking: Sauteed vegetables, stir-fries, even popcorn!

     

  • Dosage: Start low and go slow! Edibles can take 30-60 minutes to take effect. Begin with a small amount and wait to assess the potency before consuming more.

Tips for Cannabutter Success

  • Potency: The potency of your cannabutter depends on the strength of your cannabis, the duration of the infusion, and the temperature maintained.  
  • Consistency: For even distribution, ensure your cannabis is finely ground.
  • Patience: The infusion process takes time. Don’t rush it!
  • Storage: Store your cannabutter in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
