Panicked Parents and Panicky Pups: Navigating the Cannabis Poison Control Calls

Share

So, California legalized weed. Hooray! Now, everyone’s chillin’, right? Well, not exactly. Turns out, there’s a new kind of panic sweeping the Golden State: the “Oh My God, Did My Kid Just Eat That?” panic.

Yep, calls to poison control about cannabis incidents are skyrocketing. But before you start envisioning a state full of stoned toddlers running amok, let’s get some perspective.

First off, relax.

While accidental ingestion can be scary (especially for those tiny humans and our furry friends), cannabis overdoses are incredibly rare. We’re talking “freak out, but probably won’t die” levels of rare.

Here’s the deal:

  • Kids are curious: Edibles look like candy. Enough said.
  • Adults can be forgetful: “Wait, did I put that brownie away?”
  • Potency is up: Today’s weed ain’t your grandpa’s weed. It’s stronger, and even experienced users can get overwhelmed.

The numbers might seem alarming, but let’s put them in perspective:

  • Cannabis calls are dwarfed by calls about things that actually can kill you: Think cleaning supplies, meds, and those colorful laundry pods that almost wiped out a generation.
  • It’s mostly panic, not peril: Kids freak out, sure. But genuine harm? Extremely unlikely.

What to do if you think someone (human or animal) has ingested too much:

  • Don’t panic (easier said than done, we know).
  • Call your local poison control center. They’re the experts.
  • For pets, contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
  • If it’s serious, head to the ER.

Prevention is key:

  • Keep cannabis products locked up and out of reach. Child-resistant packaging is a must.
  • Educate your kids about the dangers of edibles.
  • Be mindful of your own consumption, especially around children.

Bottom line:

Cannabis legalization has brought about some growing pains. But with a little awareness and precaution, we can minimize the risks and enjoy the benefits of this plant responsibly.
