Ohio Legal Cannabis Buyer’s Guide to 2024

Share

Ohio’s legalization of cannabis has officially begun, but it’s important to remember that the rollout is gradual. While retail sales started on August 6th, not all stores are open at once.

Where to Find Legal Weed

Legal cannabis is available at medical cannabis dispensaries that have been approved to sell to adults 21 and older. New stores are opening regularly across the state, and you can find a list of open stores on Leafly’s Ohio weed store map. Many popular brands like Ayr Wellness, Curaleaf, Shangri-la, The Botanist, and Verano have also started selling recreational cannabis.

Supply and Purchase Limits

As of August 9th, dispensaries reported ample supplies, although some items may be sold out. You can legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of flower and 15 grams of extract. However, public consumption and driving under the influence are prohibited.

Cost and Taxes

Prices for cannabis in Ohio vary, but you can expect to pay around $3 per gram for low-grade shake. Higher-quality strains may cost up to $12 per gram. The average price is about $9 per gram, or $267 per ounce. Prices are expected to rise as demand increases, but they may eventually fall as supply catches up.

Ohio imposes a 10% excise tax on cannabis sales, in addition to the state sales tax and local taxes. The industry is projected to generate over $1 billion in annual retail sales.

Popular Strains

Some of the most popular strains in Ohio include Blue Dream, Original Glue, Super Boof, Lemon Cherry Gelato, Runtz, Gary Payton, Ice Cream Cake, Wedding Cake, Permanent Marker, and GMO Cookies.

Beyond Smoking

If you’re not interested in smoking, Ohio also offers a variety of other cannabis products, including gummies, vaporizers, dabs, and topicals. Remember to consume edibles in moderation and store them safely away from children.

Ohio’s Cannabis Brands and Stores

Ohio has a growing number of cannabis brands, including Jeeter, CANN, Stiiizy, Canamo Concentrates, Buckeye Relief, Camino, and Wana Brands. Popular stores include Guaranteed Dispensary, Herbal Wellness Center Columbus, and Story Dispensary in Cincinnati.

What’s Next?

More stores are expected to open in the coming months as they complete their paperwork. Ohio regulators will be processing applications on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tips for New Cannabis Buyers:

  • Research stores in your area and their product offerings.
  • Bring cash and a valid ID.
  • Be prepared to spend some time exploring the dispensary.
  • Use Cannabis Glossary to learn new terms.
