Ohio’s legalization of cannabis has officially begun, but it’s important to remember that the rollout is gradual. While retail sales started on August 6th, not all stores are open at once.
Legal cannabis is available at medical cannabis dispensaries that have been approved to sell to adults 21 and older. As of August 9th, dispensaries reported ample supplies, although some items may be sold out. You can legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of flower and 15 grams of extract. However, public consumption and driving under the influence are prohibited.
Prices for cannabis in Ohio vary, but you can expect to pay around $3 per gram for low-grade shake. Higher-quality strains may cost up to $12 per gram. The average price is about $9 per gram, or $267 per ounce. Prices are expected to rise as demand increases, but they may eventually fall as supply catches up.
Ohio imposes a 10% excise tax on cannabis sales, in addition to the state sales tax and local taxes. The industry is projected to generate over $1 billion in annual retail sales.
